My fiancé had his interview today and the CO said everything looked great but we forgot 1 paper (certification that he has never been married). He was given the green form and was told to send the paper by courier when he got it and they would call him in again. They also kept his passport. My question is this: do embassies normally keep passports during AP? I have heard that AP can take months... What if the passport is needed during this time?

I know all embassies are different, and unfortunately there isn't a wealth of current info on El Salvador.... Just a history of being notoriously difficult  .

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Yes, for AP they ALWAYS keep the passport. The 221(g) should specify that this is normal for them to keep it and they will issue the visa inside of it when/if you're approved. If you need the passport during the AP process, you have the ability to email them and request a return of your passport. People do this regularly; the letter might address this.

My fiance received a 221(g) green slip as well. Ours doesn't ask for additional forms, but describes the AP process and states that they are keeping his passport for additional checking. We're from Pakistan, so perhaps someone familiar with your embassy can confirm what I'm saying...

Good luck! Stay strong.

Thanks so much for your response. He got the paper he needed and will send it off on Monday. I wish I knew what the procedure was with 221g cases--if they got dealt with first or put by the wayside. I'm trying to be as patient as possible, but this is such a difficult wait!!

Best of luck to you as well! We just need to keep breathing and moving forward one day at a time, right??

Sorry to bother you but what certification do you need to prove that your fiancee has never been married?

It's not a bother. He needed a Constancia de Soltería de la Alcaldía, which just shows he's able to be married I think. The paper wasn't on the first list of papers we were given by the embassy, but showed up on a later list. It makes sense to go get it when you get more copies of your birth certificate.

Thank you for the information, I am going through the Fiancee visa myself and my case has just been sent to the embassy in San Salvador so I really appreciate it.

We were told the passport was being kept but then he was called and asked for the passport. He was really confused because he had no idea he had it but he went back into the packet of papers the embassy had returned to him and found it. So no, they didn't actually keep the passport but we didn't know that until they called and asked for it. They had actually had it for a month before they approved the visa too.

So they told her to send all the evidence she could with her passport by mail. Here we are, it's been over a month since she sent it and we are still waiting. Yes this wait sucks so bad
