Geithner to Ryan, “You are right to say we’re not coming before you today to say ‘we have a definitive solution to that long term problem.’ What we do know is, we don’t like yours.”

What would you do, when the choices are an hard-to-stomach plan, versus no plan at all?

When I was in the Army, there was a saying, "Pick a direction, any direction. People are dying. We can make adjustments later."

 doing something is better than doing nothing.

Somehow that doesn't seem to apply to many situations. For instance, WW1 style trench warfare sitting in your trench seems to be superior to charging a maxim.

Maybe I should have said, "US Army," but I thought that was understood. The American Army was never good at fighting from fixed, fortified positions. You would have thought we learned that lesson over the years, but then the US tried to defend Corregidor will little success. Even in Vietnam we fell into the same mindset that kept us right where the enemy wanted us. Lucky for us, the Berlin Wall fell, or we would still be maintaining a static line there, the same as we do in Korea.

with the nature of warfare as it is nowadays, i seriously doubt we'd ever see that again.

On the world front your probably right, but I figure next civil war here in the US will pretty much be just like vietnam. Trenches, tunnels, not allowed targets etc.

trench warfare hasn't been practiced in decades and for a very good reason. with modern aircraft and artillery, engaging in trench warfare is suicide.

on the subject of civil war in the us (or anywhere else) i'd be more inclined to think it would follow what we've seen in afghanistan/iraq.

I think the last war fought that way was with Iran. Once they shifted to the offensive and got into Iraq defenses they stalled due to a lack of armor. They also didn't have many land mine sweepers. I forgot what they were called, but basically adolescent kids were sent out en masse ahead of offensives to detonate the mines with their bodies.
