Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm going to ask her to check about that Smart Bro. I suppose a 2 year contract won't matter much if she leaves") I had decent internet in Makati, but still way less than here in the US. I swear Odesk and other sites where you hire virtual secretaries are almost all filipinos so wondering if they just work really slow or if they found faster connections. I figure if I rent an apartment in the city for her at that point I might as well rent one closer like in DR or something where I can at least visit a little. The flight to Asia is something I can handle about once a year and stay reasonably sane.

My fiance is from Mindanao, and she uses the Globe Tatto USB stick. I like it because there is no long term contract, if you have load for it then use it, if not then don't use it. The connection is pretty fast for the most part.

Not sure if there IS satellite in the PI, but I can tell you that for video chat, it SUCKS. Ran my own for a year in Afghanistan, and had one of the best plans offered ($2500 per month), shared among several guys, but even on my days off, when 95% were at work, the connection was not real good. Many days, it was voice only, and as bad as internet can suck in the PI, I know it was on my end.

When I still lived in the Philippines, I had PLDT myDSL (from 2004 to 2009, if I remember correctly) which was great but it has a lot to do with where you live - I lived in Metro Manila. My then fiancé, now husband, talked on Skype (video chat) all the time (from 2008-2009) and we had no problems with the connection.

I do remember that one of my cousins had a Smart Bro plan but it was horrible - her internet was always slow.

We have Smart bro USB thingy just outside of Bacong where no hard lines exist. The service is horrid. Skype vid chat is impossible on the weekends and at night. During the morning(phil time) we can skype but it is very pixelated and drops often. I'm considering installing a tower.

I've been viewing this thread hoping someone had found a reliable way to vid chat outside of huge metro areas......but I guess not.

The internet in the philippines is terrible no matter what you use. Anything wireless like smart bro, or wimax is junk. DSL or cable is the way to go and both of those are unreliable and have slow downs or disconnects often.

Those "wireless" services that claim up to 21Mbps down are a lie, in fact you can't find someone that has ever seen that speed. The latency and ping times are horrible and that matters a lot.

I suggest some sort of dsl, like pldt is about as good as it will get. Its over priced, slow , but thats our world
