WEDNESDAY, MAY 30, 2012

It's difficult to go on a book tour when you're married to the Leader of the Free World, but First Lady Michelle Obama will visit a Washington, DC, Barnes & Noble bookstore on Tuesday, June 12 at 11:30 AM to autograph copies of her newly published book American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America. Those wishing to see America's most famous first-time author have to purchase a copy of the book at the store and go through a Secret Service security clearance procedure four days ahead of the event, according to a store employee. (Above: A photo of Mrs. Obama from her book)

Mrs. Obama will visit the downtown Barnes & Noble store located at 555 12 St. NW, at E St. On Friday, June 8th, those wishing to attend the event must purchase a copy of the First Lady's book at the location (for $19.20) and leave it at the store, according to the employee. At the same time, customers must also submit their social security number and show an official photo ID (driver's license, passport) to a Secret Service agent, and they will be issued a wristband to attend the First Lady's event on June 12. Book sales and wristbanding begin at 9:00 AM on June 8. The store's phone number is 202-347-0176.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

One has nothing to do with the other. Its a right of any citizen to vote, its not a right to see Mrs Obama at a book signing.

You mean US citizen? No ID and who says their US citizens voting.

The security is at the direction of the Secret Service. You don't see the potential problems a kidnapped first lady could cause to overall national security? I understand that there has been a huge increase in threats directed against the Obamas since he took office. The open disrespect shown to them by the tea-party types, Limbaugh, Beck, Carlson, etc only fan the flames of paranoid lunatics on the far right. It is a completely different issue than the voter ID laws being proposed by republicans in statehouses across the country. Tell me that you honestly believe they are motivated by concern over voter fraud rather than by partisan striving. The dishonesty and dissembling out there continue to rise to new levels. Are you a part of that too?

Where is this "right to vote" coming from?

I didn't know the first lady was a part of our government. Last I checked she was a housewife.

Or maybe they're concerned about the hypocrisy.

The constitution.

The PRESIDENT'S wife!

The hypocrisy is on the part of the repugs! They claim to be upholding the law when the intent of voter law should be to enable and encourage every citizen to contribute. Every citizen of voting age has the right to vote (with the exception of those disenfranchised by felonies.) The accuracy of the vote goes down equally when an ineligible voter votes as well as when an eligible voter is denied. Both equally skew the results. Knowingly causing a more skewed result while claiming you are trying for more accuracy is blatantly dishonest!

The constitution.

ORLY?

Please post where it says voting is a right.

The PRESIDENT'S wife!

I already know your constitution is different than mine but maybe you could tell me where it says a president's wife is part of the government.

You said "intent... should" - obviously that's rooted in fact. Whenever you pull out the way something "should be" you're laying the smack down!

And.... where's that pesky right to vote coming from?

(with the exception of those disenfranchised by felonies.)

Disenfranchised?

You've gotta stop watching so much TV. The buzzwords are starting to overlap. Next thing you know you'll be telling me the constitution says we should provide for the general welfare.

Lets start with this:

Senators were originally selected by the state legislature with this:

But that was later modified by the 17th ammendment:

It doesn't end there, the 15th amendment:

Then later the 19th amendment:

With the 24th amendment came the banishment of poll taxes or any type of fee that needs to be paid to vote:

Finally the 26th amendment:

Uh, Slim, SMACK!

Amendments, amshmendments. Every real American knows that there's only one amendment that actually matters - the 2nd. All that other amendment stuff is just liberal drivel. Doesn't belong into the real Constitution. I bet Slim's pocket version - the true version - doesn't have those pansy amendments.

And even half of that 2nd amendment is not really american!

None of that establishes a right to vote. It's alluded to. It's even assumed that the right to vote is present. But it's never established on a federal level. If you'll notice, every single mention (up until the amendments) of voting comes from the states through the legislature or electors. The founders did that on purpose. They never meant for "the people" to run the federal government because the federal government was never intended to be "over" the people. It was simply to coordinate the States.

If anything, the amendments open up the door to prohibit folks from voting in federal elections because it acknowledges voting is not an absolute right.
