I have no experience in this, but in my opinion I would not. From everything I have heard and read the medical care sucks in Nigeria. But if you decide you do want to take the child check with his/her pediatrician on any shots (yellow fever) she/he should receive, as well as if she/he has to take malarial medicines (awful young for this but a possibility).

And lastly, before your niece can take her child out of the country, she MUST get a signed release from the father.

Good Luck!

This is just my opinion...I would not bring a child that young into Africa. I just wouldn't. There's way too much going on, and the child would need shots, etc., and I just don't believe it's worth all of that. There's malaria and everything else to be concerned about. Again, just my humble opinion, but I wouldn't. She would have a better time and be more relaxed not having to worry about her infant. Good luck with everything.

My advice is a definite no. It is not worth the possible side effects of needed vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis the baby would need.

It poses a potential health risk not to mention food safety, even with a suit case full of baby food.

Unless the mother is a seasoned traveler to third world countries and knows what to expect it just is not advisable.

Fighting yourself through the airport without a baby in tow is hassle enough.

No worries at all. Get the appropriate vacinations and you're good to go. That she'll be visiting relatives is a benefit.

It is medically safe as long as you practrise soem common sense care. ABSOLUTELY never ever let the child drink water except bottled water (there are many brands for sale from well known companies like Pepsi, etc). Do not even brush the teeth with local water unless boiled. Only eat well cooked food (there are many world class hotels/restaurant in Nigeria).

As far as medical, no worries, there are many good hospitals but at a cost.

Nigeria is not the backward country of old.

What city will she be visiting so that I can offer even more guided opinion?

Those two cities are very safe. Are you there now (since they are visiting) so you should know this.

Of course Lagos poses no problems.

How are they planning on getting to PH? If by road then of course the normal protocol: broad daylight, preferably by private car. WHen I travel I inspect the car myself, check the tires, make sure the driver understands who is in control here - ME. If the fee is N10,000, give him N15,000 and tell him the speed limits he is to follow, when he can pass other traffic, etc

If she was travelling to a village then there would be logistics to circumnavigate. There are far worse places here in the USA than those two cities that you mentioned.

Good luck. Take lots of pictures, the baby will have wonderful pictures to share in the future. How many people can say that they went to Nigeria when they were 18 months old?

remember that little ones are more apt to not care about where their hands have been before they place things in their mouths, also that relatives may just give treats without thinking. When it comes to fruits and veggies things that are peeled are safe and things that hold water are a nono ( lettuce being the worse) also ice cubes from bottled water not public.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Na wetin ? Dis na wetin...

Why expose an infant to potential harm ? An older child fine, an infant is not advisable in my opinion. Ultimately it is the mother's

decision who has never traveled there. Careful what you advice. If you are Nigerian of course it is nothing to you, it is a bit different

for someone not familiar with travel into unknown countries without build up immunity.

Since you called me out I am saying I politely disagree with you. That's all. We have have opinions, allow me to have mine. Thank you !
