Im ashamed of myself for quitting my first job..I need uplifting words

Guys,I quit my first job ever after working less than week ! I feel like a quitter.I worked at a retail store and I dreaded going to work.My manager would ask me to work over time and would not give me enough break time.She would act like she already said to take a break.I was told that I would get a 15 min break and a 45 min break.She never told me to take 15.And when I realized it,it would be time to go home.I felt misplaced,used and unhappy.My coworkers were pretty friendly,but I didnt feel like I could relate to them.Im more like the quiet and they are so funny and talkative.This is a huge blow to my self esteem.All I ever wanted to do was be a legal,active member of society.And now that im getting the chance to work and live a normal life,I quit.I think being out of status since I was a child impacted my growth.I should have had my firs job at 16 not 20 something.I feel socially akward!I have some confidence in myself,but I feel like there's a lot of growth and maturing that needs to be done.Any advice??

It does take time.I don't know what I was thinking by quitting.Do you think I will look like a fool if I called them and tried to get my job back?

You are just over whelmed, maybe you could of stuck it out and figured it out as you went. Your boss is not your friend and most bosses won't tell you to take your breaks, you need to remember to take them, unless she was preventing you from taking them at all then that is something else. Also it may not be the right fit for you. Try again with something else, and just take it day by day. I also quit my first job here in the US,it wasn't right for me, I have back problems and really should not of accepted that position to begin with (wasn't what I applied for either). Anyways go out looking again and try it out fresh, it is not because you didn't work as a teenager getting into the work force at any age or being out of it for awhile can be hard.

I think you have to approach your next job with different expectations. And understand that it can take time (months) to feel as though you fit in to a new team of people.

This is my standard approach to a new job:

In my head I split my thinking about it into two 3-month halves.

For the first three months I expect to find it difficult and hard while I get used to the new place, people and rules. When it gets tough in those first three months I remind myself that it's often tough in a new job, it's just part of the process and it's going to get better.

At the three-month-mark (which I mark in my diary) I assess the situation. If it's really bad at this point, I make a commitment to do three more months but to also start looking for a new job at the same time.

At the six-month-mark I assess the situation again. Every single time I've done this I've found that I've hit my stride, made at least one good friend in the company and am generally happy with the job. However if I had not been I would also have had several good leads for the next job.

I'm also pretty structured in my job hunt strategy. I call it 4x4. For the first four days of each week I aim to do four things a day towards the job hunt. They can be pretty small things - make a call, update a part of a resume, buy a trade magazine. Or bigger - create a website, have a meeting with a mentor etc.

Then for the last three days of the week I relax and try not to think about the job hunt to give myself a breather. It might not work for everyone but I find it keeps the ball rolling and I find it's also possible to do while working your current job.

Act like an adult. A lot of folks work for a $hitty boss or in a $hitty environment but they turn in everyday because there are bills to be paid, kids to take care of or an ultimate goal to be achieved. You need references for future job opportunities and you just pissed on your first one.

For me, the unpleasantness was more than offset by the thrill of transitioning to being a contributing member of society: I had a really strong, irrepressible desire for independence and all the responsibilities and privileges that come with it, and work was the only way to start moving toward those goals.

So...what do you hope to gain from working? It sounds like you do not need the money enough or desire independence/pulling your weight enough to keep plugging away at something that isn't fun. Those are the things that keep other people going to work even when they aren't enjoying what they do, and developing those motivations & a good work ethic are a big part of what separates childhood/adolescence from adulthood. You keep talking about needing to grow and mature? Well, working and sticking with things are a good way to do that.
