It strikes me as strange to say the least, that most of the people in this thread are so quick to help the op find a way to get married and move to the US based on this information. Falling in love with someone over the internet is much different than staying in love with someone in real life. Doesn't the fact that these two have never met face to face come in to play here, and I don't mean because it is a requirement for a K-1 visa that they do so, I mean using common sense, so they can develop a relationship and find out if they are the least bit compatible with one another? Shouldn't the advice be to meet first, to find out if they can stand being in each others presence for 24hrs, then develop a relationship over time before rushing them into a marriage that is more than likely to fail? If they can't do these things to at least find out if they have the basis for a solid relationship, then maybe it's just not meant for them to be together? Doesn't anyone see anything wrong with this picture? Would you give this same advice to your son or daughter? It seems that the sole purpose for some folks here is to get everyone into the US no matter what the cost may be.

I agree to an extent. But it's 2012, people meet online all the time. Any advice given to this member regarding fiance or spousal visas assume he is sincere, and that they have met in person at the time of filing. Meeting in person is a requirement for fiance visa, and a requirement for a wedding in the first place.

But remember, this is immigration. Immigration doesn't allow for a normal relationship to exist or develop in most cases. Especially when first meeting or meeting online. You can't go on casual dates here and there, you can't have dinner and a movie on a regular basis. You're left chatting, and the only way to meet is a 14 hour, $2,000 plane ride across the planet. Few people have the money or work schedule to do that regularly. Many foreigners have almost no hope of obtaining a tourist visa to the US either.

In this sense, I was blessed to have met my now wife while I was living in the US and still had a year and a half left on my student visa. I was also blessed to be able to travel back and forth relatively freely on the VWP after filing. I cannot imagine what it's like for two people genuinely in love to be completely separated by immigration laws.

While I don't think anyone should get engaged or married without having met in person first, it is only fair to give people advice on how to actually meet in person. It is also legal to file for a K-1 or CR-1 if your marriage was in part rushed due to immigration, as long as the relationship itself is genuine, and the plan was always to spend your life together in the first place. In many cases, this might be the only legal and viable option.

That would be a relatively unusual scenario in this situation.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
