The study is an example of how to lie with statistics. Most CEOs grew up at a time when nearly everyone was spanked. If they had done a study of death row inmates of similar ages, I suspect they'd find that all of them were spanked as children, too. This doesn't suggest that spanking will cause a child to end up on death row any more than it suggests spanking will send him to the top of a big corporation. It's just a consequence of the fact that spanking was as normal a part of childhood as peanut butter sandwiches in the mid-twentieth century and before.

The fact that generations of people grew up with occasional spanking and more-or-less turned out ok DOES suggest that an occasional spanking, administered fairly, can be one part of a good upbringing. Whether there's a better way is a question that's not answered by this study.

A more accurate study would have been to see how many people who have been spanked go on to become CEO's. I imagine a very small percentage. :P
