USC denied a US Passport

Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

A friend of ours, born and bred USC, in his 50's, no criminal record has been denied a passport and been told in order to challenge the decision he has to send school records, work records etc.

I've tried googling it but came up with nothing.

Any ideas?

Well, the only thing I can think of is they don't like the birth certificate he sent them.....

Is it possible he doesn't understand the denial letter that must have come along with this?

Maybe he wanted it for free? You do have to pay for it!

But seriously...I've had a US passport for years. I've had one so long I actually had to get it renewed several years ago. It's as easy as going bto a US Post Office.

I think there is something in the posted story that got left out. This guy sounds like a description of me...and they gave me one...twice.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Might be a new random background check. They do this with health cards in Canada.

Is this for a new passport? Perhaps he forgot to send a birth certificate.

New Passports

New Passports require a completed DSP-11 form (brown application), a $60 application fee (check or money order made payable to Passport Services), two identical passport photos (please read the application instructions regarding required size), and proof of citizenship (a certified copy of a birth certificate, naturalization document or expired passport). If a certified copy of a birth certificate is not available, the passport agency requires a letter from Vital Statistics stating that there is no record of the birth and provide either of the following: an affidavit of birth, a baptismal certificate, a hospital certificate, early school records, or a census report. Applications for new passports will not be processed unless it is witnessed by an authorized agent and sealed in a brown envelope.

Maybe someone has stolen his identity and already obtained a passport in his name?

Good point, didn't think of that.

I'll get to see the letter tomorrow so may know a bit more. He's a very thorough person, I can't imagine he would have missed something on the application, although I guess it's possible.

Thanks for your input, I'll keep you posted.

Uh, parole means the person has "done" jail time--thus no way a criminal record can be ABSENT in that case.

When I got my first passport, I had to supply proof of citizenship in addition to my birth certificate. This can happen any time with a late filing of the birth certificate. In my case, I was issued a new birth certificate following adoption dated several years after my actual birth. In my case, I had to supply an affidavit from my mother detailing the place of my birth and the reason for the late filing of the certificate.

The instructions for the passport application detail the requirements for proof of citizenship and what constitutes valid proof and when a BC is not adequate.

Mine was further complicated by the fact that when I was 18, I had my name legally changed back to it's original and then only last year had the BC amended to reflect the original last name.

It would probably help if you told us why he was denied. Its not an arbitrary decision.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.
