It's long been a maxim that the most extreme homophobes are simply acting out to cover up their same-sex desires, but only now has a scientific study come out with proof. A new joint study conducted by the University of England in Essex and the University of California in Santa Barbara will show how homophobia can be a fearful symptom of same-sex desire. The psychology is deep. Raw Story:

"Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves," the study's lead author, Netta Weinstein, explained.

"In many cases these are people who are at war with themselves and they are turning this internal conflict outward," co-author Richard Ryan added.

"We laugh at or make fun of such blatant hypocrisy, but in a real way, these people may often themselves be victims of repression and experience exaggerated feelings of threat," Ryan said. "Homophobia is not a laughing matter. It can sometimes have tragic consequences."

The study will be published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in April. Here's a video Raw Story found from the University of Rochester, which features Professor Richard Ryan discussing this very issue, mentioning that repressed-homosexual homophobics are more likely to come from authoritarian homes. He also discusses a methodology as to how a study like this could even be conducted. Fascinating.
