The biggest problem I had with the story was that he got his handgun and then loaded it......

If home-boy had kicked in the front door and come straight in there might not have been time to load.

Yeah I know some people are thinking "awe man the guy was just drunk, he would have wondered off..... and maybe it's true but,

When you barge into someone home YOU set the wheels in motion, you force the home owner to roll the odds of whether you are a harmless drunk or out for more sinister acts.

If the Homeowner decides you are a real risk and pulls the trigger, oh well you created the situation.

I live in the safest place in the western hemisphere because anyone can carry a gun without a permit or license. There are no home invasions here, no car jackings, there has not been a random homicide in the state since 2006. No drive-by shootings. Never, EVER has a police officer been killed in criminal action in the line of duty (a couple in car accidents and one drowned trying a rescue) You can leave your wallet on the front seat with the windows open. Walk the street anywhere at any time with no fear, even ask for change for a $100 bill. Your children can play outside without fear.

I keep my gun with me because it is the safe way to keep a loaded gun, ON YOU so that it cannot be tampered with. And because being armed is what keeps our community safe and the criminals somewhere else.

I'm not a big fan of the concealed gun laws or a big fan of guns period but repect your opinion. I live in a city of 30000 and never felt the need for one even when I'm in the big cities like Chicago,maybe i've just been lucky never to have been put in that situation.

There is one huge difference in this case vs the Trayvon Martin homicide. This homeowner did not go looking for trouble and did not initiate the confrontation! He was in his own home and the person he shot was there unlawfully. It is a tragedy, to be sure, but NOT the fault of the homeowner. His families' safety justified his actions and the 'victim' in this case did not deserve the 'benefit of the doubt'!

Is it illegal to physically assault someone in this country?

The concept of assault involves much more than various forms of overt physical violence. In some states the act of touching in any way during what was otherwise an assault is by itself not assault but rather 'battery'! Assault can often involve just words, other times it might be actions that don't involve touching (like getting surrounded by gang-bangers) or it might be approaching a homeowner inside his home after making an illegal entry! The underlying principle is usually that it constitutes whatever actions an alleged perpetrator takes that causes a reasonable person to legitimately fear for his physical safety.

Everything I hear now about this shooting says that it was a by the book self defense. This was no crazed white KKK hunting down and shooting a Black honor student minding his own business. I was even enraged about this event and wanted this killer strung up. Why the huge deception?

I'm still kinda middle of the road, if it can be determined Zimmerman was suddenly attacked from behind and clearly from the audio we can confirm he was in a world of hurt, he might have been justified.

If he gave a foot chase and confronted the kid, that diminishes his position.

One would expect a neighborhood Watch guy to watch and even follow from a distance to see where a suspicious person is heading.

You have no evidence of any of that because none has been presented. He was not "instructed" to do anything.
