By YUNJI De NIES | Good Morning America – 21 hours ago

It is one of the most controversial methods of child discipline, but spanking in school -- usually with a wooden or fiberglass paddle -- is still allowed by law in 19 states. The practice is most prevalent in the Midwest and South. According to a report from the Juvenile Information Exchange, more than 28,500 students in Georgia were spanked in 2008, mostly in rural counties. The number is much smaller in Florida -- around 3,600 last year -- but that's where the issue is getting new attention.

For the second year in a row, a Florida lawmaker is trying to ban corporal punishment in schools there; last year the measure never made it to the floor for a full vote.

Opponents of the ban say spanking is matter of tradition and good old-fashioned discipline. But at least one Florida mom is suing to stop the practice. Tenika Jones says the principal at the Joyce Bullock Elementary School in Levy County paddled her 5-year-old so severely last April that he cried for hours, triggering an asthma attack, which in turn required a trip to the emergency room.

The boy was spanked for roughhousing with another student on a school bus. Jones said her son had welts on his buttocks, missed a week of school and still has nightmares about the incident.

"That's child abuse to me," the 32-year old told reporters, "If they don't want us to hit our kids, they shouldn't either." Principal Jaime Handlin declined to comment, citing the on-going legislation, but she did tell the Willston Pioneer newspaper that "nothing was violated."

She added, "I disciplined out of love, not anger."

Researchers have found that spanking can increase aggressiveness in children and can even hurt the mental development of young children.

"Corporal punishment doesn't get us the results we want," said Deborah Sendek, program director of the Center for Effective Discipline, a group that advocates against corporal punishment. "You can get the same result from an intervention – simply telling and teaching children to stop the behavior."

Sendek says the practice is not only ineffective, it can also teach children that hitting is acceptable. Sendek, who has worked in with abused and neglected children for three decades, says children who are hit ultimately learn to avoid the punisher, not the behavior.

She cited a number of instances in which children were seriously injured and asked why so many American children are subject to this type of punishment.

"We're not allowed to hit a prisoner. We do not hit in the military," Sendek said, "Why do we give prisoners more protection than we give our schoolchildren?

Even if parents do not agree with corporal punishment, there is little they can do, if a school district permits it, to guarantee that their child will not be hit by an administrator if she or he misbehaves. Sendek says her group suggests that parents who want to opt out of that type of discipline should send a letter to the principal and school administrators at the beginning of each school year, and make sure that their concerns are put in the child's permanent record. She also recommends reviewing the school district's disciplinary policies and voicing any concerns at parent/teacher conferences or school board meetings before a child is ever hit.

Back when I was in third grade you didn't need the parents permission to whack a student with a wooden paddle (big ####### paddle w/holes). So anyways me and a buddy of mine (Jeff Dalquist) got called into the principles office to get three hacks each for fighting at recess. The principle gives me mine and I go back to class, and Jeff gets his and he comes back to class with his eyes watering...and this kid was tough as nails so he must have got it good. He went home and his parents took a look at him and he has big ####### welts across his buttocks and thighs. So his dad waits for the principle in the parking lot the next day and beat the principle so bad that he missed a few weeks of work. I mean he did a number on that guy. So after that they made a new rule to where you had to get the parents permission in order to beat the kids at school. When they asked my mom the next time around if they had permission to beat me and my brothers she said; "Please do.".

In 8th grade I got a total of 28 hacks for the year...that was my personal best but didn't come close to my brother's record. In high school the gym teacher who was totally cool beat the ever loving daylights out of me (twice)..and I had it coming and he knew I would never rat. But after that I never went out partying with his daughter again. :(

On the one hand I agree that kids these days are getting WAY out of control because "talking to them" about what they did wrong doesn't always work BUT some teachers I went to school with were complete a**holes and even now as an adult I think they still are a**holes so no I would have been mortified and really really angry if one of them spanked me. Probably would have done it just to be pr*cks. I think I would have turned out to be a much angrier person. HOWEVER I do think more punishment is required. I personally hated the idea of in-school suspension... basically you weren't allowed out for recess or lunch and had to continue to do work or sit quietly by yourself (I never had to do it but I know people it happened to).

A Spanking in School is Considered Child Abuse and the Administrator will be FIRED and the Family of the Child File a Lawsuit. (And win in Court)

It is STUPID. I had my fair share of spankings and pretended to cry when the Principle attacked my Butt. LOL.. It will never be allowed again and the parents are not allowed to spank their Children either.

Gotta Say Though: If They allowed it again, you would'nt even have to ask them to pull their Pants down. They wear them almost down to their knees and Butt already showing.

My Father Required a Note from the teacher everyday how I behaived and trust me. Those Notes got my #### kicked

No spanking in Ukraine. They use stun guns! And the kids clean the school after class each day. Pasha got caught with two friends smoking in the alley when he was 12. The cops shook them down for 7 UAH (almost a dollar!) and then gave them each a jolt from the stun gun for not having more money and for smoking! He says he never smoked again! Alla found out about it later and said she would have told the cop to zap him three times!

Ala is rather Ukrainian blunt about this. When we took Pasha to his school we met with the principal and his ESl teacher and Alla told them "It is OK, you can beat him, I do not care. Try not to really hurt him bad but beating is good if he needs it, he can clean the school too if you want him to"

She saw a kid acting up in the grocery store and the mother was saying "Now sweetie, behave or you will have a time-out when we get home"

Alla just looked at this and said "You should beat your child right now, just beat her. I beat my children, ONE TIME for each one, only ONE TIME"

My mother had one of those paddles for paddle ball in the kitchen drawer. She wrote on it "Brat Bat" and used to beat us with that. It didn't hurt! But it kept us in line for psychological reasons I suppose. She would say "I am getting the bat!"

The ultimate ####### beat-down is when you have to go out and get your own switch - and you had better not try to be a wise guy and get a small switch. That would force your mom or grandma to get up and get it personally - and that was never good, they usually got a switch that could be classified as a the tree branch to beat you with. Oh, the good ole days, somehow we survived, bruises and all.

My grandma and aunt both pulled that #######. Go out and bring me back a switch to beat you with....like #######? And if you brought back a twig, they went out and got a tree branch. Mom on the other hand didn't go to that extreme. She just grabbed whatever was closest...broom, spatula, belt...whatever she got her hands on.

Yeap, they'd all still be locked up today for the discipline we got in those days. Yet, somehow we survived it and turned out to be normal adults without the need for 'therapy.'

+1

That's why you have all these messed up sissy kids today. "Gender confused" ??? Parents are turning out homosexuals these days faster than Carter turned out liver pills. The dads these days are sissy's, the moms are calling the shots making their boys little sissy's and look what you have. Some emo kid taking a loaded gun to school because someone "teased him" and he starts shooting the place up. Counciling? Save the $$$ and beat the d@mn kid and treat him like a boy so he turns out liking chicks and not some metrosexual who doesn't know if he should be a giver or a taker.
