We just had a Third Grader in our State shot, in the classroom when her classmate brought mom's BF's gun (possibly mommy dearest's but still investigating) to school I'm his backpack. The kid tossed the backpack onto his desk, the pistol went off and the little girl was damn near killed.

Guns are indeed inanimate objects, but obviously can be dangerous. Especially when handled irresponsibly or with deliberate mal-intent.
