I just looked at my packet 3, and the one that says "Do not sign it" is the 156K... no idea if this is Embassy specific. AR just told me that they do not get a packet 3 /shrug blush.gif

the way i see it is unless the form or the instructions from the embassy say not to sign it until the interview then it should be signed in advance.

Your mexican fiance will have to sign it at the interview in front of the IO when indicated, NOT before.

Just went through that process. If you helped her fill out the form, you will need to sign that portion in advance. Her portion on the 156 will done at the interview process when told to do so.

can i ask what makes you say that as that isnt what the form says???

yup for cdj they send u letter with websites and thats it! no direction on how to do each one. thats why its so confusing. thanks all!!

it needs signing in advance as far as im aware... it is the DS-156K that gets signed at the interview :)

the online DS-156 says to sign in advance... it is the DS-156K that gets signed at the interview??????

edit... or is that embassy specific??

You got me thinking and your actually right.

I apologize, I guess its been a while since I filed :bonk:

OP: The DS156 can actually be signed in advance. The DS156 is the one that must be signed in front of the IO at the interview. My bad!

Noooo, you were right to begin with!

It states in the instructions for CDJ. This is why these type of questions need to be asked in the regional forums. All consulates have different instructions and procedures for the interviews.

DO NOT SIGN THE DS-156! He needs 2 copies, and he needs to sign in front of the CO when asked to sign it. They need to witness his signature.

From the instructions, very clear:: http://photos.state.gov/libraries/ciudadjuarez/231771/PDFs/K1%20PACKET%20COMPLETE%20_July2011%20UPDATES_.pdf

"FIRST: FILL IN FORM DS-260 AND TWO COPIES OF FORM DS-156 Non Immigrant Visa Application. These forms will have to be filled in online, print two copies of the DS-156 and the DS-260 confirmation page. DS-156 should be signed by the applicant on the appointment day."

Follow the instructions from your consulate. I had my fiancee leave hers unsigned, the 156, 156k, and the 230, and they just asked her to sign it right there. The 156k does have to be signed at the interview as they notarize your signature. This is actually a letter of intent on the 156k that you are signing.

Dan get back on the left side of the road.

haha :D

this thread does raise 2 very important points though...

1) once a case has passed NVC then so much of what happens next is embassy specific and questions should be posted in the relevant forum.

2) all instructions whether they are written on paper or on the embassy website should be read... reread.... and then read again.

What Dan said good.gif

If there's something that was drilled into my skull when I joined this site was... READ THE GUIDES & FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. The information is SO overwhelming, at times.....The "freak outs" are completely understandable.

I couldn't agree more!

The China portal was my lifeline after NVC.
