In the US there is a planning practice by which the local planning authority rules an area to be'Blighted'. Once it is listed as such, they can force through new development in the area. This practice is the root cause of gentrification in America. One likely difference between this example and Palestine is that the original owners are compensated, though how fairly is a hot topic.

I would assume that this is the current practice in Detroit.

The Detroit authorities are also not a foreign occupying force conducting actions that are in violation of the Geneva Convention, which prohibits such destruction of personal property by occupying forces.

That would depend on how you view local government I suppose. I know of quite a few people who see the planning department as a foreign occuppier lol.

The article is propoganda. Isreal is not the only country that destroys homes, we do it right here.

And we get to the real issue as always. Why not skip the nonsense and just state your opinion in every post? Why should it take so long to admit that the only reason for posting this is your belief that Isreal has no right to exist? Just say so to begin with.

Neither the article, nor I, said that there is never a legal basis for a government to demolish a home.

However, what we have in these cases in the West Bank are Palestinian homes on Palestinian land being demolished by an occupying force that the international community agrees is conducting an illegal occupation, in order to facilitate its illegal settlement enterprise. The demolitions are taking place to make room for more illegal Israeli colonies to be built outside the borders of Israel, in an attempt to annex territory.

After review, this thread is being re-opened. The topic of the thread is a quote that says 'no civilized country demolishes homes". The article makes the same statement to point out the 'uncivilized' actions of destroying people's homes in this particular confrontation. The responses which were reported as being 'off topic' are, in fact, on topic as they are addressing the title and the statement quoted in the article, showing that civilized countries do indeed demolish homes and that there are many reasons for such actions. A better chosen title would have resulted in less discussion about proving civilized countries do demolish homes and more about the circumstances surrounding the demolition of the homes referred to in this article.

The title of the thread is the title of the actual article, modified to fit into the two lines of VJ's title format:

MK on settler outposts: No civilized country demolishes homes

Reading is fundamental !

Nor did I report anyone for being off-topic.

Hay presto! Farmer unveils the 'illegal' mock-Tudor castle he tried to hide behind 40ft hay bales

By DANIEL BATES

Last updated at 17:50 27 January 2008

Hiding a needle in a haystack is easy enough.

But Robert Fidler kept something much bigger concealed among the piles of straw down on his farm... a castle.

Over the course of two years, he managed to secretly ? and unlawfully ? build the imposing mock Tudor structure in one of his fields, shielded behind a 40ft stack of hay bales covered by a huge tarpaulins.

Scroll down for more...

The family hid the house behind hay bales 40ft high for four years while it was being built - in a failed bid to avoid having to apply for planning permission

An Englishman's home is his castle: The Fidlers dream home complete with ramparts and cannons

Once it was finished, he and his family moved in and lived there for four years before finally revealing the development ? complete with battlements and cannons ? in August 2006.

Mr Fidler claims that because the building has been there for four years with no objections, it is no longer illegal.

But he is under siege from council planners, who say the castle at Honeycrock Farm, Salfords, Redhill, Surrey, will have to be knocked down.

"I can't believe they want to demolish this beautiful house," said 59-year-old Mr Fidler. "To me they are no different than vandals who just want to smash it down."

Mr Fidler, a farmer, erected the disguise in 2000 out of hundreds of 8ftx4ft bales of straw and covered the top with blue tarpaulin.

The Fidler's country kitchen is located in the turret of their 'castle'

After building the castle on the site of two grain silos at a cost of £50,000, he and his wife Linda went to extraordinary lengths to keep it secret. That included keeping their son Harry, now seven, away from playschool the day he was supposed to do a painting of his home in class.

"We couldn't have him drawing a big blue haystack ? people might asked questions," said 39-year-old Mrs Fidler.

Mr Fidler, who has five children from a previous marriage, said: "We moved into the house on Harry's first birthday, so he grew up looking at straw out of the windows.

"We thought it would be a boring view but birds nested there and feasted on the worms. We had several families of robins and even a duck made a nest and hatched 13 ducklings on top of the bales."

But neighbours were unimpressed.

One said: "Nobody thought anything of it when the hay went up. It was presumed he was building a barn or something similar.

"It was a complete shock when the hay came down and this castle was in its place. Everyone else has to abide by planning laws, so why shouldn't they?"

Problems began last April when Mr Fidler, thinking he had beaten the planning system, applied for a certificate of lawfulness which is given if a property is erected but nobody objects to it after four years.

But Reigate and Banstead Council says the four-year period after which the building would be allowed to stay is void ? because nobody had been given a chance to see it.

The matter will now be decided in February by the council's planning inspector, who could give the Fidlers as little as six months to tear the castle down.

The family are not alone in falling foul of planning laws.

Last November pensioners Eileen and Eamonn Kelly were told they would face prison unless they demolished the one-bedroom extension on their semi-detached home in Swanley, Kent after planners said it was "out of keeping" with the area.

More recently around a dozen Britons living in Spain have had their homes torn down after a clampdown on illegally built properties built on the coastline.

A spokeswoman for the Reigate council said: "Mr Fidler has built the house without planning permission, not sought retrospective planning permission and now claims it is legal because it has been up for four years.

"We don't think the four-year rule applies because it had been hidden behind bales of hay."

British ex-pats take to the streets in Spain to protest against plans to bulldoze their illegally built homes

Hundreds of expats stopped traffic in Spain yesterday as they protested against plans to bulldoze illegally built homes.

Around 800 British and Irish residents marched in Almeria after demolition orders were issued for eight expat-owned homes in the nearby town of Albox.

The owners are appealing but it is feared many more homes are under threat after Spanish regional authorities overruled planning permission.

Protest: Demonstrators flood the streets in Almeria in a bid to contest plans to knock down illegally built homes

Thousands of Britons have bought Spanish properties in good faith, only to find they were illegally built on protected land.

Albox home owner Nicola Veitch, of Jersey, said: 'We are devastated. We have every legal document under the sun for our property.'

On Monday, protesters bearing placards with slogans such as 'We've done nothing wrong' in English and Spanish took to the streets of the city of Almeria in a one-hour demonstration which halted traffic.

Coachloads of protesters travelled from Malaga and Valencia to support the march.

Anger: The demolition order is for eight homes owned by British residents in Albox, Almeria after the regional government challenged the building licenses originally issued

Some of the protesters say the threat of the impending demolition has affected their health

Expat anger has centred on the fact none of the affected home owners were ever informed of the risk to their properties, despite years of legal battles between municipal and regional authorities.

Maura Hillen, president of AUAN, a pressure group demanding an end to the insecurity of the Spanish property market, said: 'All eight of the affected home owners did everything required of them by Spanish law to ensure their properties were legal.

'And now the regional government wants to knock their houses down. It is time for a change in the law.

'This is not about paperwork anymore, it's about people's lives.

'These eight homes are all among the first to be built in the area and are therefore the first to come through the sausage machine of Spanish law.

'Nobody knows how many other demolition orders there could be waiting to be issued.'

The local town hall had issued building licences for the Albox properties, but they were nullified following court action by the regional government.

Also on the march were pensioners Len and Helen Prior, who hit the headlines in January 2008 when their £350,000 home in the nearby village of Vera was bulldozed.

Mr Prior joined the demo in a wheelchair, and said his health has been seriously affected by the stress of the losing his home.

Crowds: Protesters waved placards with slogans such as 'We've done nothing wrong' in English and Spanish

Mrs Prior said that no sign of their promised compensation had been seen, explaining: 'My husband is getting sicker all the time and I am just exhausted.

'And now the regional government have done the same to other people. It's disgusting.'

The demolition orders in Albox were served days before Christmas.
