Vals Sister who lives in Germany had two friends on that flight (who Val met once when she lived in Regensburg ). We had called her her sister on Sunday and she is completely devastated. One of the girls on that flight had a young daugher less than a year old but her daughter was not with her on that plane.

It is sad to say the least.

U.S. Pilots Face Charges in Brazil

ASSOCIATED PRESS

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -

Brazilian police say the American pilots of an executive jet could be charged with manslaughter if they are considered responsible for a crash that killed 155 people.

Joseph Lepore, 42, and Jan Paladino, 34, were piloting the Brazilian-made Legacy 600 when it struck a Boeing 737-800 over Mato Grosso state in the Amazon rain forest. The Boeing crashed, killing all 155 aboard.

The Legacy landed safely at an air force base, but police seized the passports of the pilots pending an investigation.

"We have received an order from the Federal Prosecutor's office in Mato Grosso to begin investigating the possible commitment of a crime inside the aircraft. The investigation begins today," Geraldo Pereira, acting director of the Federal Police in Mato Grosso, said by phone.

I've heard that Brazilian air traffic control is to blame. Even if the plane took a wrong turn, air traffic controllers should have noticed they were heading towards each other and warned them...obviously, they didn't. Who is watching the skies over Brazil?

Actually, apparently the Legacy had their computer off and couldn´t be tracked by ground, and they were also flying at the wrong altitude. All indicates it was the Legacy´s fault indeed. 155 people died in the crash. All people in the Legacy survived.

Latest news say the jet was off their radars, possibly due to having a transponder off in it.

These are the questions that authorities are trying to answer: 1) why the transponder was off?; 2) why was it on after crashing onto the other plane; 3) why didn't the pilots follow the flight course? - that said the plane should fly at 36,000 feet and not 37,000 after flying over Brasília; 4) why couldn't the air traffic control reach the jet?

Wow, that's sad...

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

If that's true, that's absolutely insane...and it would make it all their fault.

Wow, that's sad...

Yeowch...if a plane switched off its transponder in the US these days they'd find themselves quickly chased down by military aircraft.

I sure hope that what I'm hearing about the Embraer crew isn't true because if it is, these are people who should never be allowed at the controls of an airplane ever again, no matter how skilled they are. You do not knowingly deviate from your flight plan and you never switch off your transponder.
