***" versus "#######": the new revisionism

Since the 1980s, a common argument among some young African Americans

and other youth centers on the pronunciation of *** as "#######". #######, they

contend, is simply a synonym for accepted slang words such as dude and guy.

This was the (rejected) argument given by now-infamous secondary English

teacher Paul Dawson, who is white, in defending his use of the word to refer to

a black student, for which he was given two weeks' suspension without pay.

Such use of ####### is heavily dependent on context. It could be an insult to say,

"Hey, you niggaz"; whereas, "What up, my niggaz?" might sometimes be

acceptable among blacks only. In the first example, the use of "you guys" is

similar to "you people", a phrase often seen as off-putting when used by whites

to refer to blacks. The second example is in the African-American tradition

of using the word to express kinship or affection.

Proponents of this neo revisionist usage of the term believe ***, in its

vernacular pronunciation, is harmless. Moreover, many believe it draws a line

between blacks as victims of racism and blacks as empowered, street-wise

individuals. In an interview in the documentary Tupac: Resurrection, Tupac

Shakur explains, "Niggers was the ones on the rope, hanging off the thing;

Niggas is the ones with gold ropes, hanging out at clubs." [sic] On the track

"Violent," from his 1992 album 2Pacalypse Now, Shakur interprets "#######"

as an acronym standing for "Never Ignorant, Getting Goals Accomplished."

Opponents of this view argue that ####### is simply *** pronounced with a

southern accent, that the revisionist spelling is merely a phonetic representation

of the word as it always has been pronounced in African American Vernacular

English and nothing more. ***, they point out, is also pronounced "#######"

by many who intend it as a racial slur. While proponents of the neo-revisionist

use of ####### contend they have "reclaimed" the word and robbed it of its

racist connotations, critics dispute this. They claim such usage has not changed

the word's centuries-old, racist nature. African Americans generally never

consider the usage acceptable in any context by nonblacks. Usage by members

of other ethnic groups is viewed as racist and/or, as with much of nonblack,

hip-hop culture, a form of cultural appropriation. In the film Rush Hour,

Chris Tucker uses the word in one scene; and then in a subsequent scene,

when Jackie Chan repeats Tucker's line in front of a bartender (while affecting

an African American dialect), a riot ensues.

this was brought up on the last episode but why is it when a women sleeps around she is called a #######/####### etc but a man doesn't really get called anything and is sometimes congratulated etc...

Because some man wrote the rules that will eventually change. I just repeated what they said on the show when Merideth and Derek were arguing on the steps... Merideth said, "You don't get to call me a #######..." My bad, I did NOT mean to offend or turn this into a man - woman debate. Cheers!!!

It's up to you women to reverse the meaning of "#######/#######" and make it a good thing.

Just like "***" used to be a derogatory term for a black person until black people

turned it around and started calling themselves niggers.

that's a good point...i hadn't thought of that.

personally, i think merideth is an idiot. it was one thing when she didn't know he was married. but then...he IS married...and he was living with addison and trying to make it work...and still willing to drop trou' for her? well...that says enough about his character to me. a man like that? no thank you!

and as far as izzy goes...i don't care what she 'felt'. what she did was unethical. she crossed the line between personal and professional. she should have excused herself as his physician if she was feeling something more for denny. and then...well...when she intentionally caused him harm? she deserves to lose her medical license.

Uling - not to digress but I know it may be offensive to you - but not to all blacks in general. We shouldn't generalize about THAT eitgher. Having worked in an all black school for 4 years, the kids use it, aren't offended by it - and it's almost...like a good thing for them. I don't know if it's because they're trying to turn the tables and "own" the word or what...

but not all blacks are offended by it...just my two cents.
