Is that what the bailouts were for? To cover gambling debts of the elite?

And there I was thinking it was the cradle-to-grave entitlement system and a massive public sector which gave the workers whatever they wanted, including rises in wages and pensions regardless of what the country produced.

Wow, it was the public sector who sought to be bailed by the US government and the Fed in 2008? And I thought it was goldman, Citi group, etc, who got bailed out?

Or the fact that Greek workers have 37 days of paid time off - 25 statutory vacation days and 12 public holidays - and that's just the legal minimum!

Oh I get it, Greece went bankrupt because public sector workers there get a whopping 37 whole days off a year! :bonk:

But no, it was the gambling debts! Thanks, everything makes sense now!

Strange, my country has already set aside over 70 Billion Euros to cover private banking sector losses, and you want us to believe that the banks have had nothing to do with my countries economic depression.

p.s. I haven't seen you reply lately to your other tread you started, where you claim that austerity in Ireland is indeed working.

Oh, Europe is so great! The food, the culture, the history! I am sure those jade toothed hemophiliacs can find a solution to this crisis using their superior high-brow ridged craniums.

Speaking as a European too, my teeth, history and culture are great thank you and the US will never reach the standards of German industry and the civilized health care available to everyone in Europe

The northern European countries will go from strength to strength and the South are a bunch of undisciplined over-religious wasters - bit like in the USA

Disclosure:

My German and French stocks are up 6.48% in the last 90 minutes

It seems that since this thread started, events have moved on and time wounds all heels

The only country in the EU actually able to help ( Germany) - is dragging their heels to do so and expecting the IMF to bail them out ( Last I heard , anyway).

I was really sad on my last trip to the UK how welfarey chavey it had become.

People just so satisfied to live off the dole, family allowance and supplemental benefit. When I lived there ( for 21 years), entitlements were seen as nothing to be proud of, now it's the norm, andwe're heading that way too :(

It's going down the pan. I was happy to get back here, in alot of ways. .....just sayin'

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Yes you are behind the times with the news - tune in to CNBC - the stock market is up through the roof and a consortium of countries are guaranteeing liquidity to the banks

As far as the UK is concerned - you must be moving in the wrong circles - try going to rightmove.com and look for a house in Ilkley where I come from - you wont find a rabbit hutch to live in at less than $750k

There are 40 million Americans living on food stamps and 50% of the population don't pay enough to get into the tax paying bracket

The problem is capitalism. I am a capitalist and I want everyone's money - including yours

Thanks for the news update. I was behind.

I'm from near where you come from, btw.

-but you are a capitalist, but you think capitalism is the problem? That doesn't make sense. You seem to be conflicted, somewhat.

Either way, I admire the success of your portfolio.

Making money is not at odds with caring for the community and in nearly all cases it is ultimately selfish and to our benefit to live in a society with universal health care and some respect for other people - the opposite of the USA where it is dog eat dog and the devil take the hindermost

A third of all the manufacturing jobs in the USA have been taken away to China etc by - wait for it - mostly white christian men who are born US citizens and who get teary eyed when they speak of the US Military and who bang on about how wonderful capitalism is. They really don't give a damn about you or the USA - its all a smoke screen

We are living in a deeply hypocritical society and people who vote Conservative have been suckered but deserve all they get for being so selfish and having such disregard for the welfare of others in their society

You will know Saltaire - built by Sir Titus Salt - an arch capitalist but enlightened like me and Warren Buffet

A socialist and a capitalist all rolled into one - so in fact that kind of kindness and regard brings many rewards - including financial.

Quote: Sir Titus Salt

The cholera most forcibly teaches us our mutual connection. Nothing shows more powerfully the duty of every man to look after the needs of others.

Titus Salt

Because I was principled, and not just a money grubbing right winger elbowing everyone out of the way, I got a great job which needed total integrity - I cant see anyone trusting newt gingrich in that kind of position

I despise right wing politics

The government earned $25.2 billion on its investment of $309 billion in banks and insurance companies - that's an 8.2 percent return over two years.

Do you have a problem with TARP?

Austerity is the ONLY thing that works. You can keep spending more than you make for a while, but sooner or later the chickens will come home to roost.

The trouble is that the right wing apply austerity to the old, the sick, the weak - and then place new contracts with the arms manufacturers and start foreign wars to line the pockets of their friends and to steal the oil - as in Iraq and Libya which are now pumping oil for the west having been conquered

Iran is next - lots of oil there. Can we afford to attack Iran money-wise ? Yes if we strip every US senior of their pension and medicare and give them vouchers

That is how austerity works in practice

I see we are now cozying up to Burma - that is where BP first started. Can we be friends ? If I was them I would be worried.

No austerity in the drone assembly workshop

The old, the sick, and the weak-willed have all the money, and are sucking the life out of the productive portion of the population. Best to turn them into bear food.

You must be Austrian... I would guess Braunau Am Inn ?

The taxes in the US are the lowest in the developed world, and the benefits are the lowest too - so I don't feel that the weak are sucking the life out of me - in fact I am making an absolute fortune because the country is set up for people like me.

I would like to live in the UK, but the US is so mean with the less privileged to the benefit of speculators, that financially it makes sense for me to stay here

Come on. Lets give them a crumb - think of it as a tithe to jesus and the tooth fairy and the holy ghostie and santa - all the things americans believe in, instead of doing nice things for their fellow citizens

So you think that a 4.1 percent return a year is a good rate of return? How much is it once you strip out inflation?

In October 2008 Gold was priced at 737.20 an ounce and by October 2009 it had risen to $1,025.70 an ounce. During the same period the price of Silver went from 9.785 an ounce to 16.231 an ounce. Now that is what I call a good rate of return.

Do you have a problem with TARP?

Typical Neocon fuzzy logic. You ###### and moan about moan about government intervention in the markets, yet when it suits you purposes you're all for it.

Austerity is the ONLY thing that works. You can keep spending more than you make for a while, but sooner or later the chickens will come home to roost.

You love austerity, just so long as other people and not yourself are doing the suffering.

Just for the record, I am all in favor of government spending cut backs, just so long as the pain is felt equally by all and not just by the unlucky majority who don't get to see their investments underwritten by the government.

We live in a country of 312,000,000 people. Let's assume for the sake of simplicity that about 25% of those are natural-born U.S. citizens over the age of 35 and under the age of 70.

By the very law of probability, there must be at least 0.00001% of those who are highly intelligent, have high ethical standards, have no dead bodies in the closet, have not banged their girlfriend while the wife is dying at home, have not sexually molested others, have not been kicked out of office in shame . . . I mean, seriously, the Reptilian party cannot give us at least 8 people who are not the bottom of the barrel, complete morons, uneducated and clueless Christian fundamentalists, Mormons, crazy right wingers? How about one candidate? ONE, only one Republican who has a doctorate degree, has accomplished something in life, has experience, has a social consciousness, is somebody that about half of the voting public would see as a person worthy of running the greatest country in the world?

Why can't they find ONE person?

I'll tell you: because people who are worthy can't be bought by corporations. They won't be corrupt enough to run or to even accept a nomination. That's where the Reptilian party stands today: it's so corrupt and consists solely, entirely of politicians that are working for the Corporate party of the United States. In all fairness, a great majority of the Dems are part of that party as well. But show me one, only one Reptilian candidate that is remotely electable. One. There's none. That's why Mr. O. will have his second term. The Reptilians are handing it to him, and it's not a problem for the corporate world as Mr. O. is working for them as well.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Just going back to the thread subject..

The DOW was up 490 points today and 7 % in the last week !

That is not consistent with a collapse of the Euro zone

The American right wing are salivating at the prospect because they see Europe as a nest of socialists and it would validate their loathsome politics if Europe collapses

The poor deluded rightos sold me a bunch of stocks for peanuts last week and I am glad to report that I took $44 K out of their hides in the last 3 days alone !

I love going opposite to the horrible rightos on CNBC (Kudlow especially and Cramer to some extent), and making money off their rabid politically biased pronouncements

They despise Europe through a mixture of American nationalism and political bias. I 'invest' (speculate) with no political or nationalistic bias and that is why I can beat them all day long - no emotion in investing is lesson number 1 and these clowns never learned it. Didn't they ever see "Wall street" ?

Me and George Soros (another admirable liberal like warren buffet), love taking money out of the bank accounts of right wingers and I will be sure to give a cut to Mr Obama

Europe has been doing fine since the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago, and I expect it to continue.

Germany's enlightened society with excellent socialized health care and investment in people, is a formula for great success

Imagine if the USA was organized like Germany, health care costs as a whole would be drastically reduced and training raised to an art form thus restoring US competitiveness, and it could be a world beater - but with this dog eat dog reptilian attitude and totally corrupt money politics, it will still recover but not as strongly as it should

The backward right wing are holding the US back and yearning for 1776 with no health care and infected water and filthy air etc etc etc

Could we bring the Cubans here and let the right wing live in Cuba - all together - what a Muppet show that would be with Herman Cain as el supremo presidente

I agree with that post...most all of it anyways was spot on. But Europe along with Germany has dirty hands when it comes to making money. Deutsche Bank doing business in Russia helped to recently bankroll the dictator in Belarus aka Alexander Lukashenko. That was after the Germans sold out their EU brothers in the East when they made a deal with the devil for the Nordstream Gas line. In fact the former German prime ministers Gerhard Shroeder got a job as a "consultant" for Gazprom. The same Russia that has a human rights violation record longer than my arm. It gets even better when Merkel sold out Ukraine to "seal the deal" on that gas line. I trust the Euro snakes as far as I could throw them.

Nabucco line which was suppose to free Europe from Russian gas got a shot in the foot when Bersculini offered the Kremlin a deal to run South Stream through Italy. It's kind of like when Europeans were committing genocide as recently as 1994 in the Balkans and Europeans stood around with their thumb up their ####### and did nothing. But I'm sure the Euro;s were all feeling the love when they were making their bombing runs over Tripoli.

I just hope for the Brits that they don't have to suffer through more riots like they did this summer.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
