They lay eggs to replace the ones being removed from the nest.

"Chickens will try to lay in nests that already contain eggs, and have been known to move eggs from neighbouring nests into their own. Some farmers use fake eggs made from plastic or stone to encourage hens to lay in a particular location."

So when you buy eggs at the grocery store, what is the probability that one of the eggs will contain a chick about to hatch or one already dead from the freezer?

How can you tell apart a fertilized and unfertilized egg if some of them are not fertilized?

We raised Rhode Island Reds when I was a kid. We had about 30 hens and 2 roosters with one being the dominant male. Having a rooster did help the hens to lay eggs, but as others have said, they don't need his help. The rooster would mount the hens from time to time - and you could always tell when you got a fertilized egg cause after you crack it open, there's a small red blot that looks like blood. We scrambled them eggs anyway. Come to think of it, we even chopped off the heads of some of the hens later on and ate them too - the rest of them minus feathers and feet, that is. :star:

Only fertilized ones are chicks.

so where do roosters come from? :P

chick = unfledged chicken (either gender)

cockerel = just-fledged male (will soon become a rooster)

pullet = just-fledged female (will soon become hen)

rooster (#######) = mature male

hen = mature female

capon = "gelded" rooster (mentioned only for completenes--ignore otherwise)

So basically two streams:

  1. fertilised egg->chick->pullet->hen
  2. fertilised egg->chick->cockerel->rooster

Fertile eggs are not normally taken out as they are generally inedible (so you try to hatch the ones from the store--what you get is either stale or rotten, no chick).

2005/07/10 I-129F filed for Pras

2005/11/07 I-129F approved, forwarded to NVC--to Chennai Consulate 2005/11/14

2006/10/13 Pras' I-485 interview--APPROVED!

Zero to none.

Poultry farms that raise chickens for eggs do not allow the hens to come in contact with a rooster. No rooster, no fertilization, no chick.

8-30-05 Met David at a restaurant in Germany

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.
