Why don't you get a good copy before that, then you cannot have a problem. You really want to get rejected at the border because of an OS?

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

I'm not sure on the border it may be a problem once you connect the laptop online and you will get a pop up notification from microsoft that your OS is counterfeit, cops will detect the IP address and they will come to your house.

Happy New Year!

it'll be scanned for controlled substances etc. long as no foreign objects are seen in the laptop they will not do more than just look at the xray screen

In the Philippines, piracy is considered "normal" because practicality is more important than what is right. This will be my problem too once I move in the US because I am into video editing. Authentic Adobe CS-4 or 5 ranges around P150,000++ not sure if it's exaggerated, hopefully just around 30k

they will not ask you to turn on your computer. I have friends that have entered the US with "pirate" cd's containing software, movies and they never had any issues.

My experience with lap tops is they ask you to put it in the tray and then it goes to the x ray machine to make sure it does contain a threat. Sometimes they will ask you to turn it on just to make sure it is a working machine but I have never seen them actually take the time for it to boot up.They do not have the time or inclination to sit there and check hard drives. They are looking for a bomb not a pirated OS.

They have the right to "examine" your laptop in any manor they wish. They rarely invoke the right unless they are after you for something specific. ( like child porn )

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

NigeriaorBust is right, they can check the computer anyway they wish, a friend of a friend traveled to the US for work, she was held at the POE for 6 hours for additional questioning, the officers went through all her luggage, paperwork and checked her computer. Whether they take action or not after discovering the pirated software is uncertain, I suspect fairly discretionary and varies from POE to POE.
