Obama's biggest problem right now is likely to stem from the current approval rating of Congress, which currently sits right around 10%. The electorate could see it one of 2 ways. One way is to view the Tea Party as the ones who stood by their principles and so became a major driver of the credit downgrade and current crisis and move left from 2010. The other way is to view the Tea Party as the ones who stood by their principles and voted against the mess of a bill that didn't come close to trying to deal with the deficit problem and move further right from 2010.

One way, he stands a chance of getting reelected and getting a chance of having his policy get through Congress. The other way, he stands a little less of a chance of getting reelected and, if he does, he gets to use the Presidential veto once a week against a hostile Congress.

The irony of the situation is that the prominence of the Tea Party is mainly driven by the media trying to demonize them. They are small part of the US political scene, but the media are making them appear much larger, with a much bigger impact than they really have to affect policy decisions.

Of course, a lot can change in the next 15 months. Who knows, we might even get a credible GOP candidate.
