Why does the Philippines celebrate independence from Spain, but not Independence from Japan or the United States?

The United States finally recognized Philippine independence on July 4, 1946 in the Treaty of Manila.^[1] July 4 was observed in the Philippines as Independence Day until August 4, 1964 when, upon the advice of historians and the urging of nationalists, President Diosdado Macapagal signed into law Republic Act No. 4166 designating June 12 as the country's Independence Day.^[2] June 12 had previously been observed as Flag Day and many government buildings are urged to display the Philippine Flag in their offices.

That's what the link said. It dosn't explain why they changed from celebrating the day they became independent to celebrating being handed off from one colonial power to another.

The Philippine Declaration of Independence occurred on June 12, 1898 in Cavite II el Viejo (now Kawit), Cavite, Philippines. With the public reading of the Act of the Declaration of Independence, Filipino revolutionary forces under General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippine Islands from the colonial rule of Spain, which had been recently defeated at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

That would pretty much be the end of the story if this had not happened on April 19th 1901.

On April 19, 1901, Aguinaldo took an oath of allegiance to the United States, formally ending the First Republic and recognizing the sovereignty of the United States over the Philippines

I believe I stumbled upon answer. The answer is somebody died. Emilio Aguinaldo died on Feb 6 1964.

6 months later

August 4th 1964 is when they changed Independence day.

I surmise the events are related. I believe it was done to honor Aguinaldo.

He made a declaration of Independence but it never led to independence.

Anyway they wanted to honor him. Now that's the end of the story
