And by the way.... my "facts" remain unchallenged, show me where Atheists are more generous.

Danno, just for fun, here's a little challenge.

I'm an atheist, secular Jew. You're a God-fearing Christian. We're both Americans with our hearts in the right place.

A few days ago I made a Red Cross contribution for African famine relief for $50. Not a lot, but over the course of a year combined with other contributions I make for local causes and one-time international ones (Japan a few months ago) I'm comfortable with what I give annually. My Red Cross receipt is attached with the particulars wiped out (it's the Internetz) but enough intact to make it clear I'm for real when I say this.

Here's my challenge, in the spirit of let's all give to a good cause.

Name a number up to, say, $400. Any number. Preferably an odd one like $138.52 or $311.16. Pick a charity. I prefer Red Cross, but I'm ok with Oxfam or other suitable cause working in Somalia/Kenya. I'll match you dollar for dollar up to $400. Let's make the challenge open to all of VJ P&R. Who's on board? Who's all yak and who really is willing to get out the Visa card and show concern, not just mouth it?

If you accept the challenge I'll post that contribution receipt here online, as can you. Then we can both feel good that our caring isn't only words but deeds.

I don't doubt you and other non-believers contribute to causes... and clearly there are many religious tightwads as well. My rebuttal to the oping salvo here was basically that God does seem to inspire people to look beyond their own needs more so than atheists and unbelievers as a whole. (according to the numbers)

I think you will appreciate that a $400 donation from you might be equal to the sacrifice of an $800 donation from me or from others who might be living on a more humble budget.... especially in these

OBAMA YEARS.

IN fact it might come at a higher cost to donate time and work to a much needed cause rather than simply write a tax-deductable check.

Just so there is no confusion, I have never lifted myself up as the example of Charity, the donations I make are never done on plan but rather in response to events or instances of need that present them self through out the year and even at that I often feel "I have not done enough".

I admire your impulse to share with others as you do, some might Credit that inspiration to the influence of religion and faith in our culture as the well-spring of such charity.... even among unbelievers but I will assume the credit goes to your upbringing.

Danno, did you lose your job or get a paycut in the last couple of years? In other words, how has your personal income been affected by the Recession?

Without going into too much personal detail let's just say, very few people in business for themselves have seen an up tick in their income.

Kudos :star:

You and I have differed -dramatically- on other topics, and no doubt will again in the future.

But here, we are aligned.

Did you know (I'm sure you do) that the word for charity in Arabic 'zakat' and in Hebrew 'zedakah' have the same root?

The children of Africa don't care what are religion or our politics are, if we're on board with helping them.

I don't doubt you and other non-believers contribute to causes... and clearly there are many religious tightwads as well. Peace. In matters of charity, I would be tempted to say something like "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs", but then you'd accuse me of being a Marxist. :innocent:

So let's just say that charity should come from the heart, and really is not an appropriate matter for a pissing contest. The objective of doing something like this on VJ is to focus on the dire need. People are literally dying needlessly, by the thousands. Whatever any of us can do, is worth doing.
