Do you hope for nuclear war too?

I really wish Obama would have failed in his plan. (sigh)

Do you hope for nuclear war too?

No. We would lose that also.

It occurs to me that this conversation demands a definition of absolute zero for equity markets.

ok, then one can be supplied.

That would be the enterprise values of the 30 Dow constituents, based upon their fire sale liquidation prices.

Figure out what IBM, McDonalds, GE, etc. are worth if you sold them all for scrap, add that up, treat that as the book value of the company, divide by the shares outstanding to get an effective stock price, and plug that into the DJI index formula. You'd wind up with a number probably around 2000-4000. That's the effective floor to the DJI in an absolute worse case scenario.

You must have thought I was talking to you, I was not.

Who are you talking to now?

I think it will take a dive but interventions should soften it somewhat. The loss of confidence in the U.S. government should cause this to happen and can't blame the market.

Probably 5 to 8% is my guess...So what is 5 to 8% of 11,400? A 570 to 915 point drop!

Saudi Arabia -5.5% and Israel -7% so far...Asian markets open at 7pm....Singapore and Hong Kong at 9pm....BUT FIRST Australia at 5pm (less than a half hour)...But they will probably do great!

You clearly have put a lot - ok, some - thought into this. That is really not my style.

Current (20:30 CT) futures show declines across the board, but nothing indicating mass panic. The most interesting I think is the 10Yr, which has a yield bumped back up to 2.57 (gain of 17 basis points). That's significant but just puts us back to where it was a few days ago. It was 2.8 a week ago and 3.11 a month ago. No evidence (yet) that people are tossing treasuries over the side in haste. Tomorrow will be interesting. I still wouldn't be surprised if we have a repeat of Friday: a lower opening followed by back-and-forth swings with an ending that could be higher or lower.

Ya, Friday was really weird. First thing in the morning up 150, then within a short time down 150, then back up 150...then back down....Weird....Tomorrow will probably see some big volume and 100 point swings (Dow) in short time frames but I don't think it will be as bad as I thought it would be Fri/Sat....Israel indices got clobbered though...First victims and maybe they overreacted...

TASE is a pinprick and not a good indicator of major market opens.

Now that Asia is open we're getting a better read on global sentiment.

BTW, when looking at futures, the DJI futures don't really matter either. They are a CBOT contract that was intended to rival the CME's ES (S&P Emini) futures. But they never took off. After the CME merged with CBOT they make no effort to promote the DJI futures. ES and NQ (Nasdaq futures) are the primary US stock index futures. Oh, and the Russell contract on ICE gets some open interest as well.
