Oh God you guys

I just pulled the DO NOT OPEN envelope out of the plastic bag that it came in and realized that there is a hole on its side. On the side of the envelope itself, I mean, not on the side of the bag. It's not a very big hole, I think it's about an inch wide, but I am TOTALLY FREAKING OUT about it. It must have happened on the way here, because I put it in a drawer to keep it safe, still in the plastic bag, and I haven't touched it at all since then. Am I screwed? Oh God what do I do? Please help, I'm freaking out here! :crying:

I am sure it will be fine. Don't worry! It will be clear that you did not open it if it's just a little tear in it.

Thank you. It's a little tear on the side close to the bottom and it's about 1 inch long. It looks like it happened because the envelope was bent at some point but I'm scared that they'll think I tried to open it or peek in or something. Is there anything I can do about this? I mean other than not touch the thing, which I am definitely not doing until I have to get on the plane.

Generally you have to take it back to the embassy and they put it in a new packet and reseal it properly.

If you're really worried about it and there's time before your POE, ask the embassy to reseal it. You may also want to just ask the embassy about it to make sure there's no problem.

Oh Jesus I can't afford another trip to Rio the Janeiro, I'm completely broke and so is my fiance. Would it be possible to mail it to them like, overnight or something, or would I have to go there personally?

I said it wrong, it's not a "hole", it's more like a tear. I just measured it, it's about an inch long...

Edit: here's a picture of it (that's centimeters, not inches)

Stop being so paranoid! :D I'm sure you will be fine! It is quite obvious it is just a slight tear and that you have not been tampering with the envelope's contents. You would not be able to smuggle out or in one of the forms through a hole that small (it is this immigration is worried about) So calm down and forget about it. If they ask you about it, tell them. Simple as that! :)

Thanks guys

My lawyer (yes, we had a complicated case and needed a lawyer) said it's probably OK because the tear is very small. She will mail the embassy anyway to double check.

Sorry -- it seems every time I start a thread here, I'm freaking out at you guys. :(

It can be seen that it is a postal tear not from you just place it in a storage bag and leave it till you leave and carry it like that. You will be fine its ot like it is opened from the top then they might be suspicious but not from the bottom like that.

I am not sure if you could email a picture to the embassy, you might try that. It does not look that bad. But with the Government you never know

Yeah I'm just worried that I'll arrive and they'll be all "YOU TAMPERED WITH THIS! DEPORTED!" or something like that.

I'm sending them this photo and asking if I need a new one. Thanks for the idea!
