Need URGENT help, freaking out! Interview in Rio!

Hi guys,

My K-1 interview is on Tuesday (the 19th), in Rio. I hadn't given my clothes any thought at all. I work from home and I'm extremely casual, and my lawyer (yes we have a lawyer -- long story, we really needed one in our case) had said to just wear whatever I was comfortable with because it totally didn't matter, as long as I was well groomed and not wearing makeup (which I don't do anyway).

So I had chosen a (nice) pair of jeans, a white t-shirt and a denim jacket and my best sneakers (black leather Nikes, brand new). Now I am reading all over the place that I should wear dress shoes and that jeans are a terrible idea. I don't even own (nor can I afford at this point) dress shoes or fancy pants. I'm an artist and I just had to pay all those fees + the trip to Rio (I'm in Sao Paulo), I'm completely and utterly broke. Am I screwed? Are they going to think I'm some kind of hobo? Is there anything I can do about this? Would a nicer shirt improve the situation?

Please help! I'm so freaked out right now, I'm shaking.

I have never heard any body got into trouble due to their clothing. You don’t have to worry about that. It is advisable to be neat, but you don’t have to wear top designers cloth.

Other than the many studies showing that dressing up boosts the confidence of the interviewee and impression of the interviewer towards the interviewee, there is no specific dress code that is required (as long as it is not offensive or objectionable). I would still suggest that you dress neatly though.

Do you have any friends your size that would let you borrow some clothes for the interview? Like the other poster said, there's not a required form of dress...you do want to dress appropriately though. What I have read is that you want to go like you are going to interview for a job.

If you can't find some clothes to borrow, just wear your nicest clothes. You'll do fine.

Naw, unfortunately I'm smaller (and rounder ) than my friends.

Would a pair of flats be adequate as far as shoes go, do you think? I do have a pair. Is it better than sneakers?

I have a skirt (knee length) and a fancy t-shirt that ties on the back, is that + the flats better than jeans and a t-shirt?

Oh and thanks, God I'm so very nervous right now, I can't even sleep.

Oh honey, dont freak out about your clothes! They really dont care what you wear! As long as you're clean, well presented, polite, confident in your answers and are in a bona fide relationship, you are totally fine!

I'm lucky to have a huge wardrobe to choose from and when my interview comes, I know that I'm wearing nice jeans, a simple top and flat shoes bc my husband (the USC) is super casual and trust me, he's not about to get dressed up for an interview with USCIS We're going casual by choice.

Please dont torture yourself with details like that. Stay calm and focus on the outcome, which is being with your loved one.

The consulates are part of the Department of State; USCIS is part of the Dept. of Homeland Security.

Other than this, agreed with all above: Avoid freaking about something so superficial. Wear what you consider to be nice AND what you'll feel comfortable in. If you're not dressed how you're used to dressing, it could make you feel awkward or self-conscious. Good luck, and let us know the result of the interview, si man!

Wow, you guys are great! Thanks for the answers, I feel better now. I think the skirt and t-shirt will work well enough, and I'm comfortable in them.

There is a huge window between you and the interviewer in Rio. They really can't see what you are wearing. Just make sure you wear a huge smile This is not a concern at all.

You need to calm down and not stress over what you are wearing to the interview. The CO won't care what you wear as long as you are neat. Stressing out of the clothes you wear is nonsense just go in with confidence and you will pass. Good Luck!!!

Your evidence will make more of an impact than your clothes. If your evidence sucks, you can be dressed like a queen and it won't help you. It doesn't matter what you wear as long as it's clean and not too revealing. You will have much bigger things to worry about in life, much more important that an interview at the embassy.

Wear what ever you think it's comfortable, as long as you don't show too much skin.

You can wear Jeans if you want to, and have a nice T-shirt or jacket above your jeans.

And if you want, you can even wear flip flops to your interview. They are behind a counter and the LAST THING they can see or are interested about is what kind of shoes you are wearing.

For everyone's information: YOU CAN WEAR MAKE UP. Your lawyer told you not to?!

Oh sweetie don't worry!! My hubby wore shorts! It was hot and humid in London that week. He was neat and clean and COMFORTABLE! I would think if you were used to casual and dressed up for the interview and looked uncomfortable...that would be much worse. Good luck and stop stressing!!
