Hello all,

I have a few questions about the K-1 visa for Syrians:

1. How difficult is it at the moment to get a K-1 visa for a Syrian citizen? Are Syrians disadvantaged because Syria isn't exactly friends with the US? Or does that not matter?

2. Does the current political unrest make it more difficult than usual for a Syrian to get a K-1 visa?

3. I was told that the US Embassy in Damascus is closed because of the demonstrations in Syria. Is this true? I can't find anything about it on the internet. If it's true, how can the US authorities send an approved K-1 petition to fiancées in Syria? Normally they send it to the Embassy.

4. Would it be more difficult to get the visa if I as the US citizen don't have a job, and instead my fiancée proves she can support herself or my parents say that they'll sponsor her?

Thanks a lot for your help. :)

More than anything it may just undergo more administrative processing just like they do for those in pakistan and other similar areas can take a bit longer but it can be done as long as there is a genuine relationship and the other info is in place and accepted.

If the embassy is closed not sure how they would process the interview/visa

petitioner would still be the sponsor but they would need a joint sponsor showing they can support themselves and the intending immigrant but there's enough time to get a job its only roughly 19k to sponsor yourself and one immigrant.

All right, that helps.

Are you sure that I as the petitioner have to be the sponsor? According to travel.state.gov, my fiancée can also prove that she can support herself.

Is there someone else here who knows about getting a visa even when the US Embassy in Syria is closed? There are lots of people here on this portal who are in the visa process and I wonder how they're managing that.

Yes, you are the petitioner, and you are the sponsor. It makes no difference what the foreign fiancee makes. Their income is not taken into account. You must file an affidavit of support. If you do not meet the 125% poverty guideline level, then you will need a co-sponsor. Your co-sponsor can be a US citizen or US legal permanent resident.

I do not see anything on the Embassy's website that indicates it is closed. It merely states the consular section will be closed for the July 4th holiday. http://damascus.usembassy.gov/visas.html

Usually when embassies close temporarily, all interviews are canceled and will be rescheduled after it reopens. Basically, if you are in the middle of the immigration process, you will have to wait until you can continue.

Hi,

Its not difficult to get a K-1 Visa, the bulk of your wait time is here at the USCIS office...Once its approved here things move much faster in Damascus.

Its business as usual at the US Embassy in Damascus. you can check on the embassy website at "Damascus.usembassy.gov".

You must sponsor your fiancee or have a co sponsor like you said your parents could do that for you...Must show income and what not.....

Hope this help

Can the co-sponsor sponsor for the whole amount needed if I don't have a job? That is to say, I as the petitioner would be the sponsor, but the co-sponsor would take on the whole financial responsibility?

Yes. The I-134 does not allow for combining incomes to meet the poverty level, so I guess the term would be a joint sponsor. You will fill out your own I-134, even when having zero income. Your joint sponsor will fill out their own I-134, and they must make enough to cover himself, any dependents they have, and the fiancee that is immigrating.
