So the real issue is how to define "chronic offender".

IMO, it's that singular act of using the report button.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

So when will VJ admins actually address bigotry and misogyny? Is it really the policy of VJ that if a blatant racial slur or misogynist term isn't used, then it's not bigoted? That seems to be the policy from past practice.

is misogyny part of ElmCityMave's pool of concern? Recheck it, just to be certain, aye?

So the real issue is how to define "chronic offender".

Defining chronic offender is not the real issue. I think it is either the mods do not have clear guidelines on what is offensive or they just don't seem to care as long as they don't find it personally offensive.

Rob, if it makes you feel any better, I too have been chastised by a mod for calling BY out on one of his racist/anti-Muslim/anti-American rants. I am a little peeved that he lasted so long on VJ, especially since VJ is a site with a diverse population.

My reasoning was that in a link provided earlier, there was a chart showing that chronic offenders whose posts were racist or sexist would be banned as opposed to just short suspensions. If somebody is posting the rants similar to what Rob is talking about, how long does it take before it is a "chronic" offense so that the person is banned?

I'd gotten to the point of walking away from VJ due to one singular offender of this exact type of posting.

I tried reporting the offensive posts with mixed results.

I exchanged PMs with other members in our regional forum about the issue, we all agreed that it was amazing the Mods were allowing this to continue.

Some of us took the extra effort of writing long and detailed PMs to Ewok explaining how this one member was making several current active members reconsider our presence on VJ.

Guess what finally happened....

SILENCE! Not from Ewok but from the problem poster and a reply from the little furry one explaining that action had been taken.

You can't just be silent about these things. "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" (Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace)

If you find there are others commenting against the posts that offend you then by all means PM them and ask them to work with you agains the offensive posts. If enough users report the post and the replies denouncing the poster outnumber the pats on the back then the behavior can be reduced.

Just keep in mind that your replied to the offensive poster shouldn't cross the lines drawn by the TOS either. Maintain your composure and dignity while pointing out the pigheaded nature of the offensive posts.

And hence, Rob's problem. If you bait a chronic offender, you become one yourself.

Which is why you DON'T BAIT and you DON'T GO IT ALONE (not to be confused with Dog-piling). If there are multiple reports of a chronic offender's post(s) then it will be acted on.

If after a reasonable amount of time there is no mod reaction then several members can reach out to different mods for guidance.

If that doesn't work then several members can reach out to Ewok.

In the military it's calling working the Chain of Command. You have to give each level of authority the chance to work before moving on.

All too often people will choose to stand their ground and fight at one of the lower levels. Then they become part of the problem and have not even given the system a chance to work for them.

There seemed to be some clarity here - http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/322-tos-violations-and-moderator-responses/

under Unofficial VJ TOS Violations and Punishment General Reference Guide (key violations):

section.

Is it 'all encompassing' ?

IMO that document focuses on punishment. It generally reuses the same language of the TOS, or references the TOS directly. The only thing it adds is the issue of doing something in jest. Which ironically doesn't get referenced very often by moderators.

I did like the 'key violations' section, though. I read it as a list.

I thought that section was copied and pasted directly from the TOS. I'll go back and reread both to see if things were added or cut.
