VJ,

Thanks for taking the time to read this post. So far, you guys have been a wonderful help and I just received my NOA1 in the mail a couple days ago.

I had a friend who did the whole K1 process and who is helping me with my current situation. I asked him how much money he had in his account when he sent in his I-134 after he got his NOA2.

I've done a little research and I know you have to make a certain amount of money, above the poverty line... but my question is...

How much money do people usually have in their account when they send in their bank statement? My friend said he had somewhere around $2,000.

I'm just trying to save up some money and want to know where I should be at.

Thank you guys!

It is not about how much money you have in your account, it is about your current income. You will need (at minimum) your last years tax return, good to have the last few months pay stubs, a letter from your employer per the instructions on I-134, and the bank letter.

I had about $400 in my account after paying for plane tickets, hotel fees, all the other fees we have to pay for. They just looked at my tax return and letter of employment. The problem with money in the account is that you can borrow it, put it in, get the letter stating how much is in there, then take it out and pay it back. Doesn't really have much to do with how much you make a year. As long as you are above the level with steady job and income, you will be fine.

I might add that each consulate is different, so make sure you read all about your consulate and that they don't have specific requirements unrelated to the general information that I just gave you. Better to check out everything... Good Luck

If your income alone is sufficient to qualify, simply leave all asset related questions blank and document only your income. No bank statement is required unless you're using the bank account as an asset to qualify.

Current employment letter and last tax return above the poverty line is what you want. But, still save some money for expenses coming up really fast when you go through the embassy stage and through the AOS stage, and maybe a nice honeymoon in between.

I have to assume that since the OP is talking about assets that means perhaps the petitioner does not have income. If that is the case then the question has not been answered. If the petitioner has no income than I beleive the amount needed in the bank is 3 times 125% of poverty level for the household size. So if it is just the petitioner and the beneficiary that would mean roughly $58,000-$60,000 would be needed in the bank. If the petitioner has income but it is not enough to meet the 125% poverty level for the petitioner's household size then I beleive it is 3 times the difference between the petitioners income and 125% of the poverty level for the household size. Assume that the household size is 2 (the petitioner and the beneficiary), and the petitioner makes $15k per year. That would mean the petitioner would need 3 X the difference between roughly $18500 and $15000. So $3,500 times 3= about $10,500.

More info is needed to answer this question. The fact the OP is talking about using assets leads one to believe the petitioner is short on income.

Or that the petitioner simply doesn't know the asset questions can be left blank if income is sufficient. Never assume what the poster knows or doesn't know except the answer to their question. Yes, we would need to know more to know of assets are needed for this petitioner to qualify. That's what "if" is all about. IF the OP doesn't have sufficient income, I'm sure he'll tell us in due course by asking the appropriate question.

Oh God, I got confused with your answer... I've read somewhere that if you don't fill the poverty line, you can also present a co-sponsor. As I've read above, bank statements are somehow not to much trustworthy, because you can fill in your account one day with borrowed money, ask your bank to give you a statement of your account and then withdrawn the money. It's so circumstantial. Maybe if your fiance(e) doesn't reach the poverty line, you could also try to find a co-sponsor.

Best wishes to all of you for a smooth and fast K-1 journey!!

To clarify my question... what I meant to ask is how much money needs to be reflected on my statement when I send them my info?

I make plenty more than the poverty line but was just wondering if I need 3, 4, 10,000 dollars in my bank account to show that I can support her.

I'm in the process of saving money right now... just wondering how much, if any (if it even matters to USCIS) money I would need to show she won't become a public charge.

Thanks for all your comments so far. Anything else would be appreciated.

You MAY include your assets on the I-134 but you don't have to. IF your include more than your annual income you will have to back it up with documentation. The poverty guidelines are the reason for that since it's based upon 2 people(as a minimum), meaning your current (and future) annual income is the support you show as proof for you and your fiancee. It is not a necessity with assets, only if the embassy asks specifically for it.

If your income is sufficient, you don't need to show any bank statement at all. Stop wondering. This is a non-issue for you.

  • 7 years later...

Hi! Me and my fiance are trying to apply for K1 visa, i'm from Indonesia and he's a US citizen. My fiance yearly income is around 24,000 with no savings or assets.

My questions are:

1. Is it eligible for applying fiance visa?

2. What number does the US Embassy expect the yearly income supposedly?

3. Does he need to attached affidavit of Support from his parents too?

Any feedback are so much appreciated. Thank you!
