I agree except that it is not a "catch 22" Unpopular freedoms are exactly those that need to be protected. No one needs to protect popular freedoms.

That said, he did steal and destroy someone else's property and that is a crime, be it a flag or not.

Perhaps he saw the flag as part of the enemy group - in which case it could be destroyed if it did not actively offer to surrender.

When the story first came out and before we knew who did it, there was a guy I grew up w/ in Baton Rouge that said -F'n Arabs did it. I told him that thats not cool blaming Arabs for a burnt American flag at their college. His words : There's no way it was an American or Mexican. What an idiot! He now knows he was wrong, but wont change his mind about Arabs, yet I wonder how many does he really know and has met ? I'm guessing 0.

I never had anyone I grew up with ever make a comment like that.

Nobody cared about flags in England.

If the Pakistanis beat England at cricket, the Pakistani youth (virtually all English born) would drive around the streets at 60 mph waving Pakistan flags and shouting at the white English girls and calling them whores.

Due to our innate apathy, or is it sophistication, we didn't care at all and just regarded them as silly sausages

A lot of countries have a thing about their flag so it seems the Brits are different - exceptional one might say.

That quiet smirking superiority which sends the message that it doesn't matter what they say or do and which is calculated to get a seething response which can then be made worse by mocking laughter (with luck)

I commend it to the Americans, though it's too late and flags are mystical as the US is still in it's militaristic phase

My granddad really disliked nationalism and flag waving. He avoided conscription as long as he possibly could as he was 33 with 5 small kids. He was ordered to rush a water cooled German machine gun at 3.45am on Thursday 3rd May 1917 on the left flank of Oppy Wood. End of that story. His youngest son (my dad) was 18 months old and when he grew up, they conscripted him for 6 years and put him in the jungles of Burma to fight the Japanese

My family seriously dislikes militarism, and war, and flag waving.

The US has never lost a generation, and large parts of major cities, and so its all 'ra-ra' and 'we are the champions' still.

The US should quit while it is ahead with all the Nationalism stuff and have a nice life like Brazil or Switzerland or Germany (where war and nationalism is hated)
