I don't buy the whole 'it's the economy' excuse. Your husband should be able to get a job. It's been statistically proven that in times of crisis or recessions some people get wealthier.

Are there not any friends of you guys or the family that could pull some strings for him? If its his first job he's going to have some trouble finding work because companies RARELY hire individuals without experience unless they are in or fresh out of high school.

This may not seem the best advice but has your husband thought of maybe changing his name? I know it's a sad thing but there is a lot of ignorance out there. And sometimes that ignorance is in the hands of people with power. So I say give the thought of a name change a chance, if all else fails. Besides, it's just a name. If it's going to secure you guy's financial future I say go for it.

I dont know what kinda Education does OPs husband have, but economy still matter.

I have my degrees from US and I have worked here, even before I was married. Even compared to past getting jobs is difficult, economy is still bad for one job there are thousands of application.

For 1 position in MacD they are getting over 1000 application.

So all you got to do is keep trying and networking with ppl.

I don't know if this will help or if it has been suggested already. Maybe try a job center or a website from the local unemployment agencies. They are usually very flexible with everything.

If he is educated make a resume that is job specific, sometimes not putting on all your education and experience is a plus. If nothing else it is worth a try. For example when applying to McDonalds don't put all your education and experience as they tend to look for people they can mold into what they need them to be not someone dead set in their ways. Not that he is like that but loads of education and experience can be read that you know what you are doing and you won't be easily trainable....get what I mean.

Tailor your applications/resumes to reflect the job without looking Over Qualified.

I think I will be completely frustrated as well if my husband had not found a job, any job, within two years of living in the US... Has there been a real interest in obtaining a job? I just refuse to believe that there are NO JOBS to be had for anyone who is truly looking. I mean, countless numbers of undocumented aliens with no English skills come to this country and find jobs. Why couldn't an English speaking, educated, and documented man be able to get a job? Has he only completed applications? How about actually talking to managers and supervisors? Many times the minimum is completing applications, but an interested party has to show initiative and drive. Show up, request a personal interview, show a winning attitude, work ethic, interest in the company, etc.

I see alot of Middle Eastern men driving truck all the time. They get hired we have a Muslim driver who works with us in our building and I know of several more in the bay area. I see every type of people driving trucks.

Good luck on one coming from Egypt driving a truck now. I think the CNA training is an excellent Idea except for it's against his religion customes to wash another woman's private parts. But when you're trying to put food on the table, and pay the bills, one has to make the right decision for him/her own self.

He's been here 2 years, and we've put in so many applications at so many different kinds of jobs. We've lost count. NOT one FR***** interview. He's educated, presentable, well-spoken but if no one will interview him how will they choose him. We've begun to consider it is his name, predjudice, else why won't even McDonald's call him in for an interview.(Mohamed T. Mohamed) We are at the end of our ropes and it's taking a toll, a big one on our marriage.

We have had nothing but problems since we met,took me three years to get him here, now I think we both regret it. Of course, we love each other, but how can we go on like this? I know no one can really help. Unless you have a job for him. But I really wish someone could. He's in school, but it's not enough to keep him happy and occuppied, we are bored sick with having no money, and no fun. Can't even afford to go out for a stupid hamburger. We are depressed and miserable and can't even enjoy each other's company anymore, or can't muster the energy and interest to find "free things" to do. We just want to begin our lives. He needs a job to do that.

Have you thought of the possiblity that his resume and cover letters are not presentable? One typo and employers delete the resume. Remember that there are computer programs that read these documents to find specific words and save them before a human being gets to read them. It is imperative that resumes or labor requests documentation follow labor law guidelines. Having a date of birth, for example, will be enough for an employer to shred the resume as it is opened to discrimination by age. This is not the case for every employer, but for most it is. An example of those bonafide discriminatory questions is the airline industry. Of course they will ask your height and eyesight, just to make sure you're fit to manage the vehicle (an airplane or shuttle bus).

I am NOT implying that you are unprofessional by any means. I apologize if that's the impression I'm giving. I'm just trying to pinpoint a possible reason for rejection. I find it hard to believe that in 2 years he hasn't been able to find a job in a store or a restaurant. Good luck!

Why are you so negative? They do not ask you where you are from only if you are legal to get a Drivers License. Trust me there are people who have not been in this country 6 months driving truck and yes even from Egypt. Not all Muslim are viewed as bad people not every one is racist yes some are but not all. If you find it so bad being here why are you here?

Actually, we are seriously considering trucking school after he finishes this semester in community college. We have reservations, but are pretty desperate. We are concerned because most of them want work experience which he does not have much of here. But they did say they will accept letters of reference from individuals of whom he did yard work and home repairs for, thank goodness we have people willing to write them.

The trouble is, in Egypt he was a self-employed carpenter for most of his life, and owned a barber shop at one time. Why didn't i get to meet him when he was making really good money back then. No, he didn't cut hair just owned and operated it. He did work for a few companies when younger, stores, hotels, warehouses etc.

He did go to school to become a computer programmer, but that degree seems to be worthless here. And he never got to use it in Egypt. Things are so different here and it's been so long he feels he would need to go back to school here to qualify for a meaningful job doing that. I wish he was wrong but I'm aftaid he's not.

Yes, we are considering changing his name when he applies for citizenship. He hates to do it but we have awhile to decide on that point.

We did consider using his nickname, or a part of his name that isn't Mohamed when he applies for jobs, but thought it would be dishonest, and maybe disqualify him for the job if they thought he lied on his application.

Yes, I have helped a lot with his applications, and maybe it's getting to the point that I shouldn't. When He first came here, his speaking English was good but not his reading. Especially some of the questions they ask. My lord I have a hard time understandinkg them myself.

Sorry, for the long book but since there was so many comments wanted to share some things.

We met a man from Egypt when he first came here, well I knew his son first, and introduced them. This man owned a store in the local mall and decided to move the store to a mall in a bigger city. My husband helped him move, design and build the inside of the new store and was promised a job as a salesman when done. The man paid him well in the beginning. So, we rearranged our whole lives and moved there.

The man must have had second thoughts, because my husband started getting hints that he wasn't making money and couldnt pay much. Well, anyway, it was a big old mess and he had to go to department of labor to get his money. So, we moved back to our old city where we could make it financially. He's like a target, one man hired him for a week, was going to train to be a mechanic, after the week he changed his mind, too mucre h for him. Another man had him working like a dog, doing salvage, and didn't want to pay him after a couple of weeks, he got his money about four months later, after threatening with DOL.

So, it's not like he hasn't done anything since he's been here. He has tried, but we keep having bad luck. Everytime we think this is it. Our hopes are dashed. So, we are in a lull, right now, just hoping the trucking school won't be a mess like the other stuff. After all, you have to pay for it.

Anyway, thank for trying to help and I will be in contact with the person who wrote me privately.

Yes, we have thought the resume and how the applications are filled out should be done differently, but at the local One Stop (employement agency) they don't seem to know anything more about anything than we do.

I think they are there to just collect their paycheck all they do is refer you to websites, things you could do on your own at home, and hard for people with limited English reading skills. He is much better nowadays after 3 semesters of college classes.

Anyway, someone has offered to rewiew his resume for us.

Let's be serious people what truck driving agency would trust him? The first thing they will think is that he is a huge liability of transporting weapons of mass destruction. That is the society that we live in and it's the majority mind set. Sorry I didn't make the rules I just live in them. His best bet is to reach out to his Muslim Community......... Let's take a look at what's going on in Egypt, please people. Send your husband to his local Dunkin Donuts or 7-11 stores to apply. If you live in a rural community that the Muslim population is low well then all I can say is ALLAH be with you. I know you don't have the money to relocate to a state where the Islamic Community is large, but you need to start thinking quick if you want to save your marriage.

That is HOGWASH. Trucking companies only care about one thing; getting those idle trucks moving. There are ten jobs for every driver now. Wearing a turbin will have absolutely no bearing on getting a job as a driver. The product must get to market. End of discussion!!!
