China to create largest mega city in the world with 42 million people

China is planning to create the world's biggest mega city by merging nine cities to create a metropolis twice the size of Wales with a population of 42 million.

City planners in south China have laid out an ambitious plan to merge together the nine cities that lie around the Pearl River Delta.

...

The new mega-city will cover a large part of China's manufacturing heartland, stretching from Guangzhou to Shenzhen and including Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Jiangmen, Huizhou and Zhaoqing. Together, they account for nearly a tenth of the Chinese economy.

Over the next six years, around 150 major infrastructure projects will mesh the transport, energy, water and telecommunications networks of the nine cities together, at a cost of some 2 trillion yuan (£190 billion). An express rail line will also connect the hub with nearby Hong Kong.

...

Twenty-nine rail lines, totalling 3,100 miles, will be added, cutting rail journeys around the urban area to a maximum of one hour between different city centres.

I still say they've got nothing on us. The Northeast Megalapolis:

Chongqing already crushes every other City in the world with 32 million people in ONE city.

This new proposed mega city has been denounced by the Central Government in Beijing so I doubt it will ever happen, without the Central governments money no way they can afford all the infrastructure.

The difference is, they are prepared to invest in modern infrastructure - high speed rail etc. You should be jealous AJ.

I am. I would just love to live in a city of 32 million with high speed rail and modern infrastructure. Why don't I? Oh yeah...NM.

If Mr. Ed doesn't want the job, I hear Mayor Mike Bloomberg works very cheaply

(I think his current salary is $1 a year - I suspect the Chinese can spot a bargain).

In this one they are (unofficially) behind their southwestern neighbour India--before this mega-city is built, Mumbai (world's largest city) Metropolitan Area's population will have exceeded that number!

(note: MMA will not exceed it, or NE-US Megapolis, in area however)

How come?

The Central government directly controls 4 cities in China, with no middle men so to speak. Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and I think the 4th is Tianjin.

They do not support this new mega city because the government structure does not put it under direct management control of Beijing. Yes the central government controls everything ultimately, but in the 4 cities they control they have 100% power over all taxes in those cities, this new city they would have to split with a provincial government. Interestingly the 4 cities they control have the fastest growth rates in China, especially Chongqing which is just exploding and within 10 years is forecast to hit 50 million people.

It boils down to money, and who gets it.
