Medical Exam in Rio de Janeiro

I have searched the topic here, but have not been able to find an answer... :-(

When you go for your medical exam at Rio de Janeiro... do you live the Doctor's office with everythng you need? is everything done on the same day?

From my experience, the doctor will do a routine exam - breathing, pulse, blood pressure etc. He will then ask your wife a few questions regarding her health, previous conditions, vaccines etc. He will take notes and will request some further lab work if needed. At the time, immigration requested HIV test, TB and some other, I can't remember. He will also advise to maybe get the Hepatitis vaccine. If your wife has some sort of vaccination records, it would be helpful to show it to the doctor so he can take a look at what boosts she might need. I remember that I had to have a boost for tetanus and some other. This can easily be done at any public ambulatory, they do have the vaccines available and is free and painless.

She will have to see the doctor and show him the lab results and the vaccination records with the boosts, if applicable. He will then fill out the immigration forms and will give her a sealed envelope with the results. She will have to bring this envelope with her on the interview. The envelope should not be opened. This is basically it.

You can go to Dr. Duarte. He is the best! I believe my husband had to go back the next day to pick things up, but it might have been later that same afternoon.

You dont need to worry about anything.

I have talked to your wife and I asked her to call her doctor in RIo Dr. Alenxandru and tell him about her interview appointment.He will do a X-ray of chest, and a VDRL that´s all. The only thing she have to ask is when he can give to her the result, she has to get the result before her interview. I have talked to her about that. Dont worry everything will be ok!

I called Dr. Duarte's office this year to ask about the medical examination for the US Embassy, this is what she is gonna need to take with her:

- a report from her gynecologist saying that she is free of DSTs and such

- a blood test, VDRL, that her gynecologyst could prescribe and it could be done at the Sergio Franco or Lamina Labs (this blood test could be made at Dr. Duarte's office, and it costs R$100)

- her vaccination card (in my case I lost it so he told me to get the vaccines TD and MMR again - you can take it on the Health Posts for free)

At the time of the medical examination he is gonna test you for regular things such as blood pressure and so and then he is gonna tell her to get the X-ray for her chest, it is nearby his office. What his secretary told me was that I could get the results the same day. She sent me an e-mail with the requirements and so, it is in Portuguese but I can send to your fiancee through e-mail if she would like.

Just a little notice on medical fees:

The doctor we went to overcharged us above what the consulate allows. On the receipt they indicate the correct maximum allowed by the US consulate, but they ask you to pay for about 100 reals more than what they say on the receipt. And no, it is not for anything else, like labs, x-rays or vaccines, etc...that is extra and separate.

I am thinking of bringing this up with the doctor and or US Consulate in Rio. This is Fraud perpetrated against the patients, IMHO.

If you are from RDJ you must pick the docs up there.

If you are from other state you will receive at your home.

You gonna do lung Xray and blood test there.

Vaccinations must be done at your own city if is applicable (if you don't have previous register card) and you can send him through email the "new register card".
