T = Tetnus

P = Pertussis (whooping cough)

aP = acellular pertussis

Does the "P" in "DTP" not stand for Polio...?

Does the "P" in "DTP" not stand for Polio...?

On reading up on this, I think it is Whooping Cough.

In the DTP shot on the list, pertussis is whooping cough. I read up on immunizations on both countries back when I was trying to learn this stuff on my own in 2008. That's how I learned the capital letters vs the lowercase stuff on DTP and Tdap. In the US, babies get DTP mixed but polio is a separate immunization (some drops for my kids.) But in the UK, polio is lumped in with D & T as a combined immunization. So we're all kinda correct. In the UK the P is considered Polio. Not sure if I bookmarked that stuff anywhere because I think UK's may be a four drug combo. I'm pretty certain it was whooping cough component he was mostly seeking. The Knightsbridge lady was going on about a whooping cough outbreak and new strict requirements at the time. (I've never heard whooping cough mentioned again) I think my husband could have even had the polio component at NHS, they marked it DTP at Knightsbridge, and it was accepted by USCIS for AOS without seeing a civil surgeon for a further form, so all was good. Other Knightsbridge graduates have had the same acceptance.

A little background: I got waaaay into the medical stuff for AOS because things were changing right and left at just our time. There was "medicals taken after June 1...." stuff and his was like June 4 or so. Mass confusion and rumors flying on VJ about the TB skin test and HPV shots and the new I-693 medical form. I read manuals, memoranda, doctor technical instruction updates, the federal register, every medical post on VJ, and watched it all shake out. Still do. Anyway that's why medical kinda became my "thing" and why I sometimes argue with the smart ones on VJ about it. And that's for later at your AOS. But if you don't get all things recorded at Knightsbridge then you don't have the option of skipping the civil surgeon later if you choose to. Not a major crisis if you don't do it all in the UK.

Ah makes sense! I got the DTP (which I understood to be Diptheria, Tetanus and Polio) for my J1 visa to the US in 2007. However, I started thinking my doctor may have been lying to me! Good to know he wasnt!

  • 5 months later...

Okay, here's the long version of what I know from USCIS and CDC sources---

D = Diptheria

T = Tetnus

P = Pertussis (whooping cough)

aP = acellular pertussis

DTP/DTaP/DT/Td/Tdap all prevent the diseases. The difference is the mixture. A capital letter D/T/P indicates a stronger dosage in the mix. A lower case letter d/p/ap indicates a lesser dosage. Medical studies indicated that some teens and adults had adverse reactions to DTP so drug companies came up with new versions having lesser diptheria and pertussis components, mainly to be boosters. The drugs are named Boostrix and Adacel. One is licensed for age 10 and up and the other is age 11 if I remember correctly. The are not sold/approved/whatever in the UK.

The chart, being a US recommendation, would only suggest Td or Tdap for people older than 10 or so because of the drugs Boostrix and Adacel availabilty to US customers.

On to AOS approval, which is ultimately why we get these jabs. There is a hundreds of pages long manual for the adjudicators reference on every detail of approving an AOS. Concerning their checking of immunization, this is an excerpt of some of the ages/requirements for shots. (I've posted the whole list elsewhere from birth on up)

19 through 26 years
: Td or Tdap (if DT, DTP or DTaP shown: okay to accept); MMR; Varicella

27 through 49 years
: Td or Tdap (if DT, DTP or DTaP shown: okay to accept); MMR; Varicella

50 through 59 years
: Td or Tdap (if DT, DTP or DTaP shown: okay to accept); MMR (if born in 1957 or later); Varicella; Influenza (during flu season only, October 1 through March 31

NOTE: I copied this before the flu shot recommendations for all ages came out in November. But from this you can see that adjudicators are told that Td or Tdap is the correct shot, but it's okay to accept DT, DTP or DTaP.

On a personal experience note: My husband got DTP (along with a bunch of crying babies) at NHS for free. He did not send in an I-693 from a US civil surgeon with his AOS. He was approved without RFE or an interview.

Thanks Guys,

This is all very helpful!!
