The American paradox of Christianity and capitalism

When Americans decry socialism what they often mean is sharing.

It took me ages to understand that. For many Europeans living here the intensity of many American's objection to public programs of any kind is a terrific surprise, particularly when you notice how generous they can be one on one.

So something as helpful as a national health care program, which you'd think would be probably a national priority, is instead refashioned as a terrifying communist plot - and the lives of Senators and Congressional leaders are actually threatened over its implementation. Glenn Beck actually says "the war is just beginning," on his show in response to it. Talk about doomsday rhetoric.

But why? What do they actually fear? It's seems pretty evident: that poor people across the nation are going to get sick and stick the rest of us with the bill.

Screw that, says America, toss 'em out on the street instead. Don't give us any of your bleeding heart liberal compassion about our fellow citizens. It's sink or swim here, and it always was, and it always will be, and just why should it be any other way?

No one helped me, I'm helping no one.

American commentator Stephen Colbert put's the viewpoint succinctly:

"If this is gonna be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we've got to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition - and then admit that we just don't want to do it."

It's become quite clear that many Americans just don't want to do it. They can wrap themselves up in the flag but when the time comes to walk the walk they'll say no their neighbor, their state, their nation, their president and even Jesus himself.

Ever notice how the "our country was founded on Christian principals" crowd grow strangely silent when their own Christian principals dictate they materially help their less fortunate neighbors?

Suddenly their competing inheritance of "self-discipline and self-reliance" drowns out the mushy liberal sounding stuff.

Most American conservatives live somewhere inside this paradox: where the biblical commands to share are met with the supposed constitutional claims that refuse it.

And there's no way out of that labyrinth, which is why America can't find the exit.

The Founders never pushed for a national healthcare reform. The author doesn't acknowledge that Medicare and Medicaid are huge expenditures on the budget but that's typical of a Euro commenting on the American health system. Why is the American health system such concern for Europeans anyway? I could care less what European countries do or don't do with their money.

Funny how the same people who downplay the Christian beliefs of the Founders change their tune when suddenly get religion and shout "Jesus" and "amen" for some government program.

Seperation of religion and government talk goes silent.

So because health care was basically non-existent in 1776, you feel that the government has no business providing health care to the population? We didn't have a standing army in 1776 either (We didn't have one until the civil war), but yet the government spends billions every year on maintaining a standing army. Is that what the founders wanted?

The article has nothing to do with the separation of church and state, but the hypocrisy practiced by supposed followers of Jesus.

THis is another clear lesson in the disconnect Liberals suffer from.

-Wrapping yourself in the American flag should mean..... support for government programs.

-Christs teachings, concerning care of the poor actually means..... a willingness to start new Government bureaucracies to help the poor.

-Real leaders in how to reach effectively, the most needy are..... The most popular comedic shows (what a coincidence).

Oddly enough, the Left only has one answer to every single problem .....Government or government regulation (at the federal level of course).

But as the old saying goes.... when a hammer is the only tool you have, everything looks like a nail.

-No. Clearly the founders did not want large standing armies.

- Reference one place where Jesus compels his followers to .....compel others, to give to the poor.

I didn't say the government should have no role in healthcare but invoking the name of Jesus to do is more than hypocritical from the same people that have no use for religion than to use it to justify more government programs.

We had the Continental Army in 1776 so the Founders went beyond the local militias. It strunk down but we had a samll standing army long before the Civil War.

"After the war, though, the Continental Army was quickly disbanded as part of the American distrust of standing armies, and irregular state militias became the new nation's sole ground army, with the exception of a regiment to guard the Western Frontier and one battery of artillery guarding West Point's arsenal. However, because of continuing conflict with Native Americans, it was soon realized that it was necessary to field a trained standing army. The first of these, the Legion of the United States, was established in 1791."

The only logical explanation is that religious republicans want to decide by themselves who they will help and who they will not help. Control issues so to speak :)

Close but... not.

A tax cut is an admission that monies have been collected that shouldn't have or funds that are no longer justified.

Sometimes a "tax increase" turns out to yield a negative revenue stream over all, and so a "tax cut" is offered to remedy this.

-No government can operate with out expense.....

when we have efficient Government, we will have a tax rate that reflects that.

Do you give "help" to blind charities... or do you want to know where, and with what effectiveness, the charities spend their donors money?

Get serious, there has been no greater fertilizer of the poor and their long term problems than the Government ... and those whose job security depends on the poor being poor.

Why do you think we celebrate those who climb out of poverty? Not because they overcame starvation... but because they rose above complacency.

Logical if you only consider original language, founder's intent, etc.

Times have changed more than a little. If we are to survive as a nation we must be able to keep up with those changes! Beyond the obvious fascination and enjoyment of guns that some people have, is there really a coherent reason for society to continue to endorse the concept of nearly unlimited gun 'rights'? Unless they really believe the ChiComs are coming or that they intend to rally with their like-minded individuals and declare revolution against the democratically elected government of the United States. And if they do use these arguments I would suggest they seriously consider the full ramifications of their argument.
