And there are still people claiming Faux News Channel isn't dumbing people down. Starts at about 1:50. Hillarious!

"I'll tell you why [religion is] not a scam," he [O'Reilly] said. "In my opinion -- alright? Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can't explain that. You can't explain why the tide goes in."

Silverman looked befuddled. "Tide goes in, tide goes ... out?" he asked.

"See, the water, the tide-- it comes in and it goes out, Mr. Silverman," O'Reilly repeated. "It always goes in, then it goes out."

"Maybe it's Thor up on Mount Olympus who's making the tides go in and out," Silverman retorted.

"No-no-no!" the host objected. "You can't explain that. You can't explain it."

Oh, and for those that are as confused as Bill on this one, meet yer God:

I'm sure Bill actually does know about the moon and tides, and yes him saying that to prove God's existence is a lame attempt. He is probably saying God designed it all to work that way, and so it does. And I agree.

Lame is definitely the word. But I might apply it here a bit more than just to Bill-o's ignorance. Be careful when you try to rescue something that is sinking. Tying yourself on to it may just take you (or your argument) down with it!

I don't agree with everything O'Reilly says anyway. But, for people to think he wouldn't actually know that the moon affects tides is lame too. He got an education at secular colleges, who wouldn't learn about that in a science class?

I give you credit for having 'faith'! :)

(faith - belief in something in spite of lack of evidence)

He's not saying that at all - he's saying that the tides cannot be explained. Since he can't explain it, he's suggesting that God must make it so. Given the fact that we know that the moon is the force that causes the tides, I can only arrive at the conclusion that Billo worships the moon. He doesn't know that but he does it all the same. :P

Christina, watch the colbert link a few posts above. He's said it many times. It does seem like he doesn't know. Not everyone remembers everything they learned in middle school science.

BUT if I had to spin what he says in his favor, I'd point people to the colbert clip and you'll see how often he has made this point. And he seems to stress the fact that it happens every time without fail. Well, man made systems fail. They fail a lot. I think that may be what he's getting at - the sheer defect-freeness of the system. Who else but God could design that? -- is what I think he could be saying.

I did watch it earlier.

It is funny how many times he says it. But I have a hard time believing that he doesn't really know.

It's irrelevant.

There are lots of things that we don't know and/or science hasn't explained yet.

It doesn't mean that we should make up stories to explain them.
