Liberals won't like this. They'll consider it some public religious ceremony and protest!

WASHINGTON (AP) — And on the second day of Republican rule, the House reads the Constitution.

Those wondering whether the reading will be dramatic won't know until around 11 a.m. on Thursday, when volunteers will give voice to the seven articles and 27 amendments that make up the nation's governing document.

Republicans have made strict adherence to the Constitution a key tenet of their effort to reduce the size of the federal government.

Also on Thursday, the House is to take up its first spending cut measure, a proposed 5 percent trim in the budgets of leadership, rank-and-file member and committee offices. Republicans have estimated that this will save $35 million over the next nine months.

35 million? Wow! That's a full one thousandth of one percent of the federal budget. Relatively speaking, it equals my cutting a few pennies out of my annual spending. Not sure I'd notice. On the bright side, that leaves them only $99,965,000,000.00 short of their campaign promise to cut $100 billion dollars from federal spending this year. They are already three one hundredth of a percent closer to meeting that pledge. Way to go!

You have to give credit on this though. A lot of disdain for congress is their in-house spending and not cutting back while everyone else in the country does.

I'd applaud a member of either parts that stands up and says no more private jets, no more first class flights, etc..

The Socialists will just go and have their hair done and get massages then get together and get drunk until the reading is over. The ones that really need to read it is the GOP who keep saying they are for the Constitution but usually vote for anything that is not constitutional themselves. Maybe they will learn something finally.

Credit for what? A symbolic cut of 5% out of Congress' massive spending? I didn't set the bar - the GOP did. $100 billion of cuts in the first year. This step does nothing to accomplish that as I have described above - it's a mosquito pizz.

It's day 2.....

I'm not saying they'll do what they say, I'm just saying it's a start. Which is a lot more than we can say for the past few congresses of both parties.

It's day 2.....

Yes, 2 out of 265 remaining days for the fiscal year. To meet their Pledge to America, they'd have to announce more than 10 times the savings now on the table each and every remaining day. Every day, including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, we'd have to get an announcement that another $375MM savings has been put in place. Given that, do you see just how insignificant this $35MM is? It's a drop so small that it doesn't even make it to the bottom of the proverbial bucket.

So, you propose somehow cutting 100 billion (or whatever) without first cutting $35M? Cutting $35M does nothing to prevent them from cutting more - in fact, it seems like a first step to doing so. Will they follow through? Who knows? Probably not, but the idea that cutting "something" is somehow worse than cutting "nothing" doesn't make any sense to me.

If you add enough "little somethings" together, they can actually result in something bigger.

I haven't proposed saving "at least $100 billion the first year alone" - the GOP has. Not just proposed but pledged. This is like pledging to run across America in a year's time and taking less than half a step on day one and then resting for the remainder of the week. Do the math: You'd have to add roughly 2,900 such "little somethings" to get to where they pledged to go. And you'd have to do that in the next 260 or so days. That's 11 such "little somethings" each and every day starting today running through September 30 and including every Saturday, Sunday and Holiday. Do you really believe that's going to happen? Do you really think that's realistic?

Man, I hope they come up with these kinds of cuts in spending but I just don't see it happening. They won in early November and had two full months to develop a strategy and present that strategy to the people. And this is all they can come up with after just having helped add some $900 billion to the deficit over the next two years? Who are they kidding?

It may be paltry ... but it's the closest thing to *change* we have seen in a long time.

It's even inspiring *Hope* in some. (panic in others)
