Hey Everyone...

I got my temporary I-551 (Immigrant Visa) on my passport and came to the US on NOV 10...its been a month now...and I haven't received my Green Card...I have my SSN...(I went to the office myself and applied for it immediately after I came to the US...and got my SSN in a weeks time...)...

The thing is...does anyone know how long it takes to get the green card ...??

Its just that I want to travel back to Canada for the xmas...so do you think I will have any issues coming back into the US...with my Canadian passport which has a temporary I-551 in it...I feel...they shouldn't give me a hard time...as I am a Permanent Resident now...I have the SSN...its just that...I just don't have the "actual" green card in my hand...

So should I go...or should I wait until I have the green card in my hand?

Please advise!!

Hey Everyone...

Usually, the green card comes within a month but no worries. Your stamp is good for a year.

The I-551 stamp in your passport acts as a temporary green card and as pushbrk posted it is valid for a year. Have you received a welcome letter yet? If so, the receipt number on it will allow you to track the progress of you green card production through the USCIS site.

As far as travelling to Canada, you will be fine. I travelled back twice before receiving my green card and had no issues at all at the border.

I poed on October the 31st and received my greencard on the december 12th. So did sara jane. I am sure it will be there soon as they say 4-8 weeks. You i551 will do fine for a trip back home, it proves that your are a us resident and is good for one year. have a happy christmas. :)

OBX- I tracked my case using the receipt number and they are saying that my application is now in Texas and they are reviewing it...so not sure what that means...

I am just a little nervous...hopefully there wont be any issues...fingers crossed!

Is that using the receipt number from your welcome letter or your original petition? The welcome letter will have a new receipt number, mine started with SRC and the "notice type" was listed as "Welcome Notice" and that is the one to use to track the green card production.

The card typically arrives about two weeks after the welcome letter. I'm sure yours is on its' way soon. :thumbs:

I never got the welcome letter...so I called USCIS...and they said its not in texas and they are working on it...so they asked me if I got any welcome letter...and I said NO...and then they told me about my receipt number...and said that my card should be there around jan...

I am putting it on the USCIS site and its under "Initial Review"...not sure...

I followed mine on the USCIS site under "Check My Case Status." Sounds to me as though you are checking in the right place. MIne is still registering after a year and half, now it says "Post Decision Activity." I'm sure yours will show a change in status soon.
