Hey Everyone-

I can't seem to find a similar situation to mine which is:

I will be poe, thru Maine on December 3rd - on k1 visa - we will be leaving Maine about the 7-8 for Michigan as we are getting married in that state.

Everything that I have read says I should wait for 2 weeks to file for my ssn - but with the time frame that wouldn't be possible in Maine which is where I will be living. We won't be back until the first week of January...

1. Can I file for a ssn in the state that i won't be living in?

2. How much of an issue is this going to be to get my ssn when i get back to Maine in January?

Anyone have any ideas?

Many Thanks!

You have until 2 weeks before your I-94 expires to apply for a SSN. The sooner you do it the better, but you should try and wait at least 10 days from entry otherwise you might not be on the system.

You should have no problem applying for a SSN in the state you won't be living in. I got mine in Texas but I now live in Iowa. I needed to change the address on it (which I have) and didn't have any issues.

Like Vanessa said about your I-94 but you can wait till you get back to Maine if you don't want to have to change your name . It takes only 1-2 weeks for SSN to arrive. I was lucky and got mine within a week.

Divorced !st November 2012.
