Hello all-

Thanks in advance for your in-put; been reading forums, just got confused...

I will be poe - Dec 2, 2010, Maine, will be my home state -

getting married Dec 18th in Michigan - we were planning on staying in Michigan through the holidays; returning to Maine right after the new year

Question - i know i have to wait 10 days before applying for ssn - will the above time frame be too long? Does it have to be done on a time limit?

If theres a thread - please direct me to it- i am totally confused with the next steps after poe

Thanks a bunch guys!

As long as your I-94 still has a good amount of valid time left on it you shouldnt have a problem getting your SSN. If there isnt much time left on it then they wont issue the SSN and tell you that you need your EAD or green card to get the ssn.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

I am a Citizen of the United States of America. 04/16/13

I had to get my SSN card a month after I poe'd because they didnt have me in the system yet. So from your time frame it seems like it'll be fine. You should still have almost 2 months on your I-94.

Life is like a roller coaster. Hold on tight and enjoy the ride!

Sounds perfect and like the poster above said - you might have to wait longer then 2 weeks before you're in the system anyway.

Keep in mind - you're coming in December...2 weeks from then is practically Christmas and with all the hgoliday closings for government offices over the holidays...applying in early January for your SSN is just about right! Not sure if you're the female or the male but if female and you are taking your husband's name - this will work out because you can apply for an SSN in your married name as long as you have your marriage cert with you.

Good luck!

I don't know if I just got lucky or if it varies from state to state, but I got my SSN a week or so after my POE. Also, I don't know if you've already looked into it, but if you're getting married in Michigan, you'll have to wait a little bit to get your marriage certificate in the mail, if you're getting it mailed in Maine. I don't know, some states are different, but I know that in some, it can take a couple weeks to receive it. And you'll need it for you AOS...

I don't know if this was of much help, but just thought you should look into that if you haven't already...

Good luck with everything!

You can get your SSN after the 10 days, but must be before your I94 expires. I waited until after the wedding to apply for mine so I can get it in my married name and not have to go multiple times but the woman didn't understand anything about "our type". She said I couldn't apply for one until after I got my GC haha but then let me apply for it in my maiden name. So I applied for it and went back 2 weeks later to talk to someone else, told her what they woman said and she coudln't believe it then BAM now I have the right one. Just make sure to do it at least a month before your I94 expires so you have some room for error.

Also - it's good to have before you have your biometrics appointment because they will ask for it. It's not mandatory, but reassuring. I like to pretend it'll help things move along faster even though I have no idea whats going on behind the scenes hahaha
