moved from Immigration News forum to Politics and Religion forum as not an immigration news story.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Where do you stand regarding the AZ immigration laws? Are there certain scenarios you have been put into similar to these laws?

I support the laws as they are only enforcing American law.

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

I think one need only spend a few hours on this forum to conclude that Immigration Law is not "simple" (see AOS from inside US discussions)

Cops should be doing Cop work and Immigration Folk should stick to what they know, you wouldn't call a HVAC guy to do carpentry work at your house would you?

Fully support and think all states should have laws also. The Feds are unable to enforce the laws and are overwhelmed trying to stem the flow. In fact they have announced they are only going after dangerous illegals so they have forced us to fend for ourselves.

The way the law was written was discriminatory. If they had written it so that everyone, upon arrest, had to give their citizenship/visa/legal status information, it would have been fine - just another data point, like your weight, height, eye color, distinguishing marks, etc.

You're supposed to produce a driver's license at a traffic stop prior to an arrest. You can also arrest someone with no ID if there's probable cause. The Federal law and a few local law enforcements partners already enforce the immigration law and there's a jail full of folks in my town facing deportation/jail sentences to prove it.

They are stupid ands worthless. If Arizona REALLY wants to stop illegal immigration into Arizona they will pass a TAX that will wipe out any business, employer or homeowner that dares to hire an illegal alien. $500,000 per day per person ought to do it. Obama will love it...he loves taxes.

Why a tax? Because it is not a crime there is no court needed and you can seize property to pay tax. Hire an illegal to mow your lawn? LOSE YOUR HOUSE! Who do you think will do it? Which illegal immigrant will remain when no one will hire them?

No need for fences or for police to check IDs, just make it economical suicide to hire an illegal alien and NO ONE will do it. Make it economically bankrupt for an illegal to seek work in Arizona and no one will do it.

They ARE here for the $$$. Employers hire them to save $$$. FIX THAT and the problem evaporates. No deportation needed, they will WALK out.

I'm all for Arizona's fight to maintain its sovereignty and protect its/our border. The feds should be shamed for trying to interfere instead of doing their job and backing up Arizona and enforcing order in immigration law, which, btw, was under state jurisdiction not so long ago.

Pretty much the same as Gary. Its a waste of time. Even if people were apprehended, the Feds still have to process them and they don't have the resources. Because of the difficulty with determining illegal status when no ID is required outside of operating a vehicle, the law would have been costly in terms of lawsuits (as has been shown with 287G)

From running a business perspective, all you would have to do is make any payments to somebody not legally authorized to work not deductible for taxes.

Issue would diminish to a point where conventional enforcement could work.

While I think your proposed penalties are extreme, you have the right idea, you have to start at the source of the problem, US businesses.

Very similar to the drugs issue in principal.

I do think that they should focus more on making drivers licences foolproof.

As far as Arizona goes, each state should be able to do what it wants. Also, we're supposed to carry proof of our status around all the time anyway. (Not that I do.) In fact, it was only after the Arizona law made the news that I found out that state police couldn't just randomly ask me for my green card, lol.

However, that doesn't mean that it's a law I would've personally chosen to enact. IF you stop someone because there are doing something illegal/suspicious, then you ask them for their driver's licence. If they can't produce that then you escalate the situation. Either the eventual end result is that they get in trouble for no licence or a fake licence, and whilst they are in court for that their illegal status becomes apparent and then you deal with them, OR they have a real licence and nothing happens. To deal with the illegals with valid ID they should focus on making the system for obtaining a licence better.
