China Bullet Train Becomes World's Fastest

The Huffington Post/AP | By ELAINE KURTENBACH First Posted: 10-26-10 04:33 PM | Updated: 10-26-10 04:33 PM

HANGZHOU, China (AP) -- China rolled out its fastest train yet on Tuesday and announced that the Three Gorges Dam, the world's biggest hydroelectric project, is now generating electricity at maximum capacity -- engineering triumphs that signal the nation's growing ambitions as its economy booms. (Scroll down for photos, video.)

The successes demonstrate how, after decades of acquiring technology from the west, Beijing has begun to push the limits of its new capabilities, setting the bar higher on mega-projects as it seeks to promote the image of a powerful, modern China. But many of these initiatives have come at great human and environmental cost, and some have questioned whether the country fosters a sufficiently innovative spirit to compete on the next level.

Still in the works: more nuclear power plants, a gargantuan project to pump river water from the fertile south to the arid north, and a $32.5 billion, 820-mile (1,300-kilometer) Beijing-to-Shanghai high-speed railway that is scheduled to open in 2012.

"We are now much faster," Railway Ministry spokesman Wang Yongping said at Tuesday's inauguration of the super-fast line from Shanghai's western suburb of Hongqiao to the resort city of Hangzhou. "Now other countries are hoping to cooperate with us."

The train will cruise at a top speed of 220 mph (350 kph), making the 125-mile (200-kilometer) trip in 45 minutes.

China already has the world's longest high-speed rail network and aims to more than double its length to 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometers) by 2020.

Chinese companies are also vying for projects overseas, including in the U.S., which leads the world in freight railway technology but has almost no high-speed rail expertise. That's a mark of how well and quickly the technology has been adopted by Chinese companies, who have traditionally only been able to compete on price in bidding for railway and other basic infrastructure projects in the developing world.

The Three Gorges Dam has been more controversial, though the government has relentlessly touted the $23 billion project as the best way to end centuries of floods along the mighty Yangtze and provide energy to fuel the country's economic boom.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

That's faster than trains in Australia, but much slower than planes in America.

I wouldn't mention flying in the US, which has become a joke and something you'd expect out of some Sudan. Though, we all know that you don't like to talk about private sector failure and utter incompetence, doesn't fit in line with your batshit crazy ideas. Nice diversion from China kicking your azz, once again. China is not out to take on Australia, it's you they hate.   They like Koalas and Kangaroos. Not to fond of the libertarian types though, as they really really like big-government.

Speaking of planes, one guess which airline and in which country has more A380 and the 787 orders, since it's still in development, than all the US airlines combined.

Trains are so 1800's.

Hey, whatever helps you sleep at night.

China isn't out to take on Australia. They will take over Australia, big difference.

What the heck is an "Australia" and why do the Chinese want to make better trains than Aussies? Not even a challenge.

I'd rather fly on an American plane than ride a Chinese train. We know how greatly valued human life is there and what an outstanding safety record they have. Ask the miners.

And life is valued here is it? I think anyone from a first world country will strongly disagree. It's just they do not spend much time in ot, there rants can be seen in the regional forums, with others from their countries.

Take the roads for example, they're a joke and unsafe, which results in death. More Americans are killed over four months on US roads, than in 10 years of fighting two wars.

China - 1

USA - 0

Get used to it.

Please, even a fool isn't going to claim that China has high safety standards in any industry or anywhere else.

I'd read up on the West Virginia coal mine disaster a few months back, before opening that mouth of yours. I'd also keep Katrina int he back of my mind, but that is me.

Better yet, how about the latest fail, where due to gas extraction, people can literally light their drinking water on fire.

Oh, I saw you posted and thought it might be the article about Canadians NOT going to Vermont to avoid Canadian National Healthcare...but...no.

Google mining deaths in China and compare it to the rest of the world. China has pathetic safety standards across the board. Dig all you want, there is no comparison between US and China safety standards, or regard for human life. Don't make yourself look foolish.

worst mining accident ever was in china - killed 1,549 miners working that day

In 2006, according to the State Work Safety Supervision Administration, 4,749 Chinese coal miners were killed in thousands of blasts, floods, and other accidents.
