licenses in the US

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up about swapping out licenses. I called the DMV in Missouri five times before someone could give me a concrete answer on whether or not my Canadian husbands CDL would transfer and if so what endorsements would transfer. I got about five different answers but the last guy I spoke with quoted a law and sent me to a website that had the law written on it. All commercial licenses from Canada and Mexico transfer to the US. All endorsements except for HAZMAT also transfer. Basic licenses (ie class 7 or 5) however are NOT guaranteed to transfer so you may have to take the test (both written and driving) over. Aparently all this is due to an agreement with I think the guy said NATO or NAFTA. (I cant for the life of me remember which one) But hopefully this will alieviate some stress for a few getting ready to move.

Very true!! Here in SC - I got my DL with no problems. Didn't have to do a test, written or driven. Had to have my SSN and GC and that was it. They also let my keep my license from BC, and DID NOT punch a hole in it! :) *I don't use it, of course, but it's a nice keepsake*

I had to do the written test in Arizona. No SSN and no GC required, just marriage licence. No in car driving test for Canadians. But my suggestion? Even if you think you must know all the rules...study first! It wasn't just the metric measure that threw me, there were all kinds of driving laws here that were new to me, ie. can't park on the same block as a firetruck even if it doesn't have its lights on... Humbling. ;-)

I had a class 3 Alberta DL (class B here) and I was only given a Class C here, which is the basic DL.

It was in the Bel Air office.. I may have had the wrong person helping me as she really didnt know much about it and asked someone else there.. this was years ago though.

Each state is so different. There are a million variations of how to deal with a Canadian DL. Well, I guess in this case there is only 50

Here in CO, you need an EAD or GC and SSN. No written or road tests. They also let me trade in my Ontario G2 for a full license.

Has anyone ever tried to compile a list on how to get a DL in each state? It may be something valuable for us to start, considering Canadian licenses are often treated differently than other foreign licenses. It could be part of the Canada Wiki!

oh and when you do take the driving test make sure that the car you use has everything working right on it like the lights etc...

I had got sent away a few times.. once because the lights were the wrong colour.. the person who had the car before us had changed the lights to a light green.. I can't remember why they sent me away the 2nd time but the 3rd time i just took my FIL's car.. :P oh and I had to wait a few weeks between appointments too... They couldn't just go through the whole checklist the first time, no, that would make it to easy on you.. they disqualify you with the first wrong thing they find ...

In PA you need just your GC and SSN, and your "G" [not G1/G2] Canadian license, and they hand you the new license.
