I have been thinking about trying to get satellite internet at the house in Negros for a while now. Our house is situated between Vallehermoso and Canlaon in the mountains of Negros. Smartbro doesn't work due to no signal, so satellite seems like the only option. I have looked at Ipstar on the internet and they have retailer offices in Luzon. I was wondering if anyone in the RP forum has satellite internet or knows of a retailer in Cebu. Is there another service provider in the Philippines besides Ipstar? If anyone has experience with satellite internet in the RP feel free to share your experience.

Theres an internet cafe in Canlaon that has satellite internet. When I asked them what provider they used, they just gave me a blank stare (I don't speak ilongo). So they are not a good source for information, but atleast I know it works in Negros with the correct line of site.

Thanks,

Wyatt

I do not have experience with satellite internet in the Philippines. We had DSL available in our area.

Have you tried AZ Communications? They have different plans, but no rates are listed.

Sorry I could not be more of a help to you. Hope you find a better solution.

I was once in the same thoughts with you, however when I start receiving the information from the satellite service providers I have inquired with, I then realized that this is something that is only for people who has big bucks, or business.

Since the market of the satellite internet is really not that common for household setting, as economy speaks.. supply and demand. The cheapest I think that I can recall was Php 85,000 for the installation and 1/yr contract.

I couldn't remember the company name for this since it was like 3 yrs ago since I tried to gather infos about this.

I think it might give you an idea that satellite internet is a little bit costly.

Thanks for the links and the advice. I figured I would be willing to pay up to 4500 pesos a month depending on bandwith and speeds, I have other uses for it besides just casual entertainment. 85,000 peso setup is way to steep. 4G would be great if it could get to our area. Years ago I forget the name of the typhoon but it dammaged a cell tower in the area. It had been dammaged before and they always repaired it, but after that typhoon they relocated it and now I have to climb about 50 meters up the mountain and stand on one foot and wave the phone to get a signal. I thought about getting a signal amplifier and booster and priced them at about 16,000 pesos. After doing some research I found out that the signal it boost for the cell phone isn't the same mghz signal that smartbro picks up on. So I thought it was a little pricey just to be able to make a phone call from the house. I will be landing in the RP tommorow for a few weeks and plan to canvas the area for some ideas.

I figured I would go talk to the Dream satellite guys and see if they know a satellite internet provider.

Ok. I sent an inquiry about the satellite internet service to speedcast company.. here is what they replied..

----

Thanks for your email.

The monthly recurring charges and equipment cost will depend on the bandwidth that you need.

As an estimate, for a 256kbps/ 1Mbps service, you will need to install a 2.4m antenna at your site.

Bandwidth recurring charges is about USD 620/month and the eqmt set (ex Hong Kong) is about USD 3,900

This is excluding local customs, tax, engineering services and license.

Please advise if we can proceed further to provide the full details and terms.

Look forward to hearing from you.
