You're right. As a medical professional, I've seen alkies who need a .2-.3 just to not be getting "the shakes." People who are totally coherent with a .5.

What the original article is arguing is that some alcoholics only need a small-ish, steady stream of alcohol to keep off the physical side-effects. This keeps them from ending up face-down in a ditch, the eventual 911 call and ER + ICU stay which often ends up in the 10s-100s of thousands.

This is also why I always give the bums in front of the liquor store a few dollars. That 40 of Steele Reserve is keeping them out of my ER.

Oh god, 211 steel reserve..... that stuff makes me cringe.

This is like those experiments where the mice can choose food or cocaine. "Every hour... ring the bell." Pavlov would've been proud.

For the record, 211 is garbage. Everybody knows OE is the way to go!

Ensure your beneficiary makes and brings with them to the States a copy of the DS-3025 (vaccination form)

If the government is going to force me to exercise my "right" to health care, then they better start requiring people to exercise their Right to Bear Arms. - "Where's my public option rifle?"

Actually Slim, this is nothing like that. This is a practical approach to a far reaching problem in which traditional methods have miserably failed.

OE is garbage as well, Mickey's is the way to go :P

Giving them keys to race cars is also practical.

Mickey's is pretty good. Nothing like a grenade to get the party started!

I don't think you quite understand the condition of those who are being treated slim. These are people who are in physical pain and unable to function even on a basic level without having alcohol in their system. You cannot cut them off cold turkey and hope they make it through the withdrawal pains. They are essentially weening them off while putting them in therapy.

I understand why they're doing it. However, it's a long, drawn-out process and chances of working can't be any higher than any other treatment programs because, like most substance abuse programs, they only treat the substance abuse problems, not the underlying issues. I wish them well, I wish them success.

If that doesn't work.... race cars for all of 'em!

Well Marc, you would be the resident expert on alcoholism.

But in all seriousness, I have seen homeless alcoholics who can turn up a bottle of jack, just to be functioning. It's quite sad.

You hang with the homeless?

Um, from my experience with chronic alcoholics, they'd probably manage to kill a dozen people with a race car before they even injured themselves.

The nicer the people, the worse the disease. Our last "nice" alcoholic ended up brain-dead after being a passenger in a car wreck. The nastier they are, the more likely they'll live through multiple gunshots, stabbings, sepsis, pancreatic cancer (swear to god), advanced COPD, lung cancer...they'll just keep coming back to kick and hit and spit on you, day in and day out.

That's why you put them on a closed course.... with each other.

Then put it on Pay-Per-View for $49.99. Everyone wins!
