PR gaffe is right, but seriously... why is this even in the news? Does anyone expect Mr Hayward (or any CEO) to actually get his hands dirty?

What exactly should he be doing that he isn't?

BP CEO Tony Hayward has faced fresh criticism for taking time off to go sailing with his son instead of dealing with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The White House said the move was one of a "long line of PR gaffes and mistakes" by Mr Hayward.

Well it's kind of ridiculous that it is news as you said.

People are making a big stink. It's not like he was getting on a yacht and vacationing for a few days either. He was watching a yacht race with his family.

On top of that, he's been relieved and is no longer in charge of the oil spill cleanup operations.

Funny thing being is I don't see the same people criticizing Obama taking his Chicago vacation with his family and then still continuing to play golf every couple of days while this is going on. While troops die in the middle east, and while this oil spill is happening, tsk tsk.. - Of course the same people criticized the living hell out of GW Bush for doing that. Guess which President stopped to make the people happy.

Hmm, just a thought (and slightly off topic). Why don't all corporations just revolve leadership while under congressional inquiry. It would make it a lot harder for Congress if they are always dealing with new reps.

Hayward certainly does have image problem. Doesn't put himself across very well.

Lord Browne was worse though

Sorry, can't agree on that one. Browne was a bit of an ####### for sticking around past his sell-by date (and thus creating the leadership struggle that culminated in Hayward), and of course there was the ridiculous sex scandal with his lover, but in general Browne's reputation in the City was far more positive than Hayward's is or has been since his tenure began. I had a terrible feeling about Hayward when he took over in 2007 but what good is there in being a Cassandra, eh?

Exactly

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt
