Wife was told at her oath ceremony to make a copy of her certificate in case it is lost, since I was there, also heard that. Never said a black and white only, so I scanned it and with my photo program, typed in, "Copy for USCIS Replacement Only" in red letters in a blank space. Guess I am paranoid after dealing with the USCIS. But obviously, a copy even without that notice.

Not sure if we will ever have to use it again after sending it to the DOS for her US passport, in just about all cases, her passport will suffice, and to renew it, don't need that certificate even for them. But if you lose it before getting that passport, I really don't know what to say except get it renewed. Still wonder if the DOS will accept a copy at one of their 12 service centers with a long tearful explanation. Also wonder if they make a copy of it.

NickD-Hmmm...Another good point too....Is it illegal to make color copies too? (that's why I just stuck with black and white). Nevertheless, it says nothing whatsover about it being scanned into a computer and printing the words 'for USCIS replacement only'...So technically that should be legal......

Oh yeah, we all have that paranoia after dealing with the USCIS...Who wants to deal with them ever again after all the ####### they put us through over the years.......

So yeah, to everyone: Don't lose that certificate! Keep it in a safe place!

As for the DOS...Well....If the other government agencies make copies of the certificate, then the DOS makes a copy of it too. However, one major difference is that the other government agencies give back the certificate in-person on-the-spot, within a matter of a few minutes (and even then, I'm watching their every move to make sure they don't damage it). Whereas the DOS keeps it for days and weeks...And who knows what they do with the certificate for that long....One can only wonder if they make copies for themselves for illegal distribution (just kidding....)....

Hence, that is one of the reasons I choose not to get a US Passport...They can't guarantee that the certificate won't get lost/damaged/stolen, etc. along the way....And I'm not responsible if they do so otherwise.....

My point is...If everyone can make a photocopy of the certificate...Fine....If nobody can make a photocopy of the certificate...Fine....But there shouldn't be any contradictions (especially from government agencies) as to what is illegal/legal to do.....Just a thought...

While the Certificate of Naturalization is certainly a cool document to frame or at least to keep in a safe place, it's only needed once in a lifetime: when applying for the first passport. After that the first passport is the proof of citizenship for any and all purposes I can think of.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I have a major issue!

My entire family is having a family reunion in Colombia this summer and I can't find my Certificate of Naturalization to apply for my US Passport. I only have a copy. I did some research online and found out that it cost $380 to replace and take very long to get a replacement. Is there any other way, form for me to provide proof of Citizenship so I can get a passport and visit my family. Or I was also thinking that I still have a valid Colombian passport could I travel with that? And if I did how would I get back into the country? My travel plans are for The 1st week in August. Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Lily, I have some new information that might help you ! Please let us know if you are working on something already.

I am just now filling out the online forms for passport application and if you are in an emergency situation or you cannot find your certificate they can do a 'file search' for you for $60 in additional fees, ie. they will lookup the USCIS records to see if they can find any information on you being a US Citizen, you need to request it when applying for the passport and declare yourself as a USC. For more info go to travel.state.gov or call 1877 487 2778. Good luck !

i have a question though, to the OP, I hope you will be able to settle this predicament soon

sorry for hijacking the thread , but reading all those I got curious and wanted to ask, how long does it usually take for a newly naturalized person to apply for a US-passport? even if they do it the next day they get naturalized.

You can apply ten minutes after you receive your certificate if you just have the photos and all the needed paperwork with you, it will take you the same time it takes for every other first time applicant:

Regular Service 4-6 weeks

Expedited Service 2-3 weeks

Applying at a Regional Passport Office 1-3 days (need to have proof of immediate need, urgent travel or emergency)

The actual application process (preparing all the papers and handing them in) takes 15-20 minutes plus whatever commute you have to the agency handling your case.
