I recently got married a few months ago. Now my husband is being the petitioner. I was wondering I came in the US with a visa but now is expired. Does that affect anything? Also I knew someone who just finished the process and she didn't have to do form I-485, why would I have to do it? Because I came with a visa? Can anyone help, I'm also new to this website.

Are you currently in the United States or did you return home? That can play a big difference in what you need to do.

I am still in US, I've been here since I was 5 and my visa was expired few years ago without knowledge. Than I got married now I'm trying to do all this paperwork but I don't even know where to begin.

I don't want to give you bad advice because it is very important that you take the right steps. I do know that you do not want to leave the United States. What type of visa did you have and how long was the visa valid for? How old were you when the visa expired? How long did you know your spouse before getting married and do you have a lot of information proving a legitimate relationship (the government will be suspicious)? These are other questions that will help others address your situation.

I would recommend doing a search of the forums to see what you come up with, but not all posts give correct information, so be careful because like I said, you do not want to make the wrong move. You might want to consult a good immigration lawyer if you have the money, but make sure that he or she is a good one.

Here is an old thread that I found
