Does my wife just go get the police certificate now before we are approved or do we get something from NVC first before we go get it?

depends on the validity of the police certificate and how fast the gov't issues them.

She will be able to get it from the internet as well.

I had both of mine printed off from the internet and it was accepted just fine. The certificate is valid for 3 months but the consulate in Brazil accepts up to a year.

Good luck!

Also, if she is not able to get it online and the police station asks her for a 'request' from the Consulate, you can find it here:

You should start working in getting them when you have scheduled your interview. Since the police reports have an expiration date, you should time it based on your interview.. To avoid any possible obstacles or return back to the embassy becuase the IO was in not the best mood, I wouldn't risk to present any expired reports.

Edited:

Since you have to get two reports, you may want to read some of the expirences found here.. It may be as an additional help of the one given in this forum. Good luck

You said wife but your profile says K1 (fiance)??

If you are applying for K1 you will need the certificates by the time for the interview.

If you are doing Cr1 then you need them to send to NVC at the DS230 stage. Then get it as soon as you receive the NOA2 and have everything ready to send when you get your RDJ number.

As I said before, I printed everything online, and if you want to do it now it's fine. If the interview is far from the certificate date, she can always print a new one and bring along to the interview.

I issued mine on March/February and my interview was on May. They never asked for a new one. I have an email from the Embassy in Rio and they say they accept the certificates up to a year, even though it's says only 3 months on it.

ps- please update your profile with the correct visa :)

Good luck! Hope you get your NOA2 soon!

EDIT: also, you confused me again with the visa fee. If you are doing CR1 you don't have to pay this fee. The fees on NVC are $400 for the DS230 and $70 for AOS. Then at the Embassy only the mail fee to send her passport back. If it's fiancee visa, then yes, I guess you have to pay the 131 or whatever it is now. please update your timeline =)

Great, so is CR1. (I think you will be able to change it on your 'profile settings').

For the federal report go to www.dpf.gov.br and for the civil one depends on what states she lives in. Try google for "antecedentes criminais".

Don't forget to validated it online after you issue it. It will be an option: validate it? You click yes.
