DMV Investigations Won’t Issue Drivers License

I actually just came from renewing my license ( I too have a conditional greendcard that expires next august) and they were super extrict with the documentation asked!!! I not only had to show proof of domicile, which had to be 2 different statements from within the last two month, but also had to show them my social security card. I found this very odd because I thought the card was pretty useless and the number was more than enough. Honestly, shouldn't they be ok with the greencard, why are they asking for the actual social security card!?

In Pennsylvania the DMV has a fact sheet. On the fact sheet it tells you what class visa, ex. K-1, F-1 etc... It tells you what documents you need to bring to apply for a license or a state id.

When my husband and I went to apply for his state id, they had to send his info to Harrisburg before they could allow him to have a state id.

The agencies don't talk to one another. Its a sin.

Hello guys, my friend, this is my comment. I thought really in California was easier, because of the very liberal State that is (in my personal opinion). For me is strange to hear, read or watch that a person in CA has been investigated or even restricted for a driver's license. I recommend you that you can bring the DMV the lease, where you live with her, utilities statemest or any kind of evidence that she is living in the address that she is claiming on. In my personal opinion, I don't think that she would have any problem to get another extension of the license. Anyway, in case of any denial, just wait until she gets the conditional or oven the other 10 year permanent green card. Thanks and bye,

In NJ just FYI if your GC ( 2 year ) expires and you have not been approved and received the 10 yearcard you are out of luck, Also onthe DL they place in red letters TEMP IMMI status. pizzed me off to no avail. However they did issue hubbies DL with an expiration date 90 days after his 2 year card. We live in NJ as well, and we were about to go to the MVC to get the drivers license extended for one year with our I-751 NOA1 and prior green card. Is it true that NJ doesn't accept the NOA1 which specifically mentions that the conditional status has been extended one year?

Has anyone extended their drivers license in NJ with the I-751 NOA1 receipt?

I do remember reading of a VJ member in the Canada forum that tried to renew her NJ licence with the extension letter and it was a no go. Sorry I don't remember what the eventual outcome was though.

I am in NJ as well and will be in the same situation next summer if my I-751 takes more than 6 months to process.

Question....

I haven't done the driving test since being in the US because our car had a minor issue that wouldn't let me use it for the test. I do drive occasionally using my license from my home country which is still valid (I've been a licensed driver for over 13 years). We just bought a new car that's in perfect shape and I was planning to head to the DMV next week to get my state license. Based on what I'm reading here it seems like they'd shoot me down if I tried to get one. A couple months ago I applied for a state ID and because we don't remove conditions until July (card expires in October) they issued an ID that expires the same date as my conditional residence card.

Do you guys think I should just drive with my home country license and my state ID and wait until AFTER we remove conditions and get the 10 year card to get the state license? I don't do too much driving in general...hubby is always behind the wheel. I just don't want to and get stopped on the road without a state license.

What would you do?

Not an expert on the issue or anything but in DE here, I wasnt even allowed to get a State ID with my married name... They said new policies restrict usage of married name unless in the form of a passport, GC or another ID (how dumb if ya cant get one in the first place?)Even though they ask for letters, leases and marriage certificate (all reflecting new last name); they had no real value as it all got down to my I-94 which has maiden name.

I'm deciding to wait until the GC arrives to do my DL and anything else because apparently that's the only way its gonna get done.

What would you do?

I have two thoughts.

1. You need to check and see if the US accepts your home country's DL. You may easily get a ticket because it is not recongnized.

2. From what you are saying, if you do apply for a DL, it will be valid as long as your GC is, so no sense in getting that done now and have to do it again in 4 months.

If you must drive and your DL is not recognized in this country, you can apply for an international DL and drive using it here... this is a very complicated suggestion but it is worth keeping all documents legal.

V333K....that's my sticking point. I know even if they do let me take the test I'm going to only have a valid card for a few months and am not sure it's worth all the hassle just to have to do it again shortly (or pay again at the very least).

I do know that I could drive on a valid license from another country for 1 year...but I've been a resident of this state for a year since last month so that's pretty much not a loophole anymore. I'm going to call the DMV and ask them what they recommend I do in this situation.

Let us know know how it turns out...I will be very interested to hear if they accepted the extension letter. Unfortunately the experience of others has been that often the DMV staff are not well versed on their own rules and regulations!

So we went to the NJ MVC in South Brunswick, NJ, and we had no problem with the I-797c and expired conditional residence card. They knew exactly what to do, and we didn't even need to explain our situation.

They issued a new drivers license which is valid until 15 months after the original expired conditional residence card - 12 months for the I-797c letter, and 3 months extra which is their standard practice.

My recommendation is to print those pages and take them with you - not all employees at the DMV know everything and the problem with that is they think they know everything.... therefore, it is good to be prepared and not have them look it in their copy of the manual....

Congrats and thanks for the update. I'll wait until we get the NOA before I go and apply for the license. 15 months is WAY better than 4!
